Has anyone here upgraded their stone with James Allen? How was the experience?

I’ve done it with my ring and also one I had purchased for my daughter… and may be doing it again if the stone I have on hold pans out. 😬 I found the process to be quite easy.  Perhaps too easy. Ha!

Since JA requires the upgrade to be double in price of your original stone, once you find a suitable candidate,  chat with the gemologist and request an idealscope (or ASET for fancy shapes) image.  When you confirm it’s meeting your expectations, they will send you a label to send your ring back for review.   It took approx 2-3 days from the time it was received for the review to be completed and upgrade approval.  At that point, you pay the difference for the new stone and any setting charges, such as a different setting style or in the event they have to remake your current one.

My process has been a bit different because I’ve opted to have the diamond sent to me first so I could inspect it in person.  In that case, you will need to pay for the diamond in full, and then they will refund the difference when you decide to move forward, once they’ve received and approved your trade-in diamond.

One other thing to keep in mind if you choose to receive the diamond first is, it does count against your 30-day return period.  The clock starts ticking from the time they ship out the new diamond.  So, the last time I upgraded, I essentially had 4 days left on the return period once I received the new, completed ring.  That said, I wouldn’t do it any differently because I found it valuable to compare my current stone to the new one. Also, if I hadn’t of seen it in advance and subsequently decided I was unhappy with the new diamond, my trade in stone would have been long gone.

Overall, I’ve been satisfied with their upgrade process… wish they didn’t require double the cost to qualify, but that’s a different topic.

First pic was the original ring and the second, my current ring – if all goes well, I’ll have a new one to share soon. ☺️

Great experiences w/ JA so far.  I had a setting change for the first emerald cut(from tapered baguette sidestone to a bezel style ring.) Later on(about 2 years later?), we upgraded to the square EC in a baguette setting w/ custom fit baguette band.

IIRC the trade-in and new ring-making process took about 3.5 weeks(?) We reserved the new diamond the day it popped up in the search… and sent the existing ring & diamond to JA by Fedex the next day to be examined/approved. ….I’m guessing it would have gone faster if I didn’t want the custom band too. My husband dealt with them directly and everything went quite well.
