Jay videographed my wedding in may of 2010. We’ve sent him several emails and letters since then with no luck.  Last time we were in contact was on my wedding day when he told me that it was the best wedding he ever shot.  My husband and I tried to be partient since we read that some couples got their videos and or raw footage a year or so later. It’s been more than a year and I was ready to finally file a small claims today against him.  But now I’m reading these last few comments and wonder if it’s even worth going through the trouble.  What happens if you file a small claims and they don’t show up? What are everyone’s next steps? I saw some comments about a class action lawsuit.  Is there anything I should know or do? I just feel clueless about what to do next. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I received a letter in the mail today notifying that mira joo @ the above address is filing for bankrupcy.  There’s a meeting of creditors on Feb. 24, 2012.  Has anyone else received this letter and what actions are you planning on taking?

how did you get mail from Mira Joo? did you visit her at factory place? it seems from blogger when the went only yoda the dog greeter them at the door and mira not open door for them. does she have our videos anymore? another blogger mentioned 4 weeks ago jay responded with still waiting for shipping of his video things to korea, he’s practically homeless, not have his equipment, moved to korea for health reasons, lost money due to fraud upon him, etc etc…

@rhubarbs:  I too received the “Notice of Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Case, Meeting of Creditors, & Deadlines” letter last week.  It’s sent directly from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court stating that Mira Joo is filing for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.

Key statements on the reverse of this form document: “The debtor is seeking a discharge of most debts, which may include your debt.” “There does not appear to be any property available to the trustee to pay creditors. You therefore should not file a proof of claim at this time.”

So…if you’re hoping for a full or partial refund, I think this makes that very unlikely.

However, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to request that Mira hand over the original raw footage tapes/DVD’s of our weddings to us if she still has them.  There’s no intrinsic market value to those tapes/DVD’s, and thus they can’t be liquidated to pay other debts anyway.

There’s a Meeting of Creditors (“The debtor must be present at the meeting to be questioned under oath by the trustee and by creditors. Creditors are welcome to attend, but are not required to do so.”) on February 24, 2012 at 8 a.m. at 725 S. Figueroa St., Room 101, Los Angeles, CA 90017.

Given that Jay is no longer in the U.S. and Mira is avoiding everyone, that could be the best (and only) time to make any requests before she completely goes into hiding.

Hi everyone,

The short version: if you’re still missing your wedding video footage, contact Yeong Lee (the legal representative working on Mira Joo’s bankruptcy case) right away at 213-387-7414 (SoCal Law Group PC, http://socallawgroup.com). She will make a good faith effort to try to help you get the raw footage of your wedding from Mira. Don’t wait too long, since once the bankruptcy case is over in a couple of months, you might not have another chance at this.

More detailed update (thanks to information from multiple couples that have been involved in the process over the past week):

The Meeting of Creditors (normally a short perfunctory meeting) was “continued” (scheduled for a followup meeting) on March 21, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. because the bankruptcy trustee saw that 5 couples were at the meeting with questions about their wedding videos.

Apparently Mira says that Jay went to Korea with the videos and his equipment a year ago, and that she hasn’t talked with him in the past 6 months.

In the meantime, Yeong Lee (the legal representative who’s working on Mira’s case) has agreed to help couples get their wedding footage from Mira if they’ve never received their footage.

While Mira says that Jay originally took the videos with him, she has some digital copies (in the US and at her parents’ house in Korea), so there’s no 100% guarantee that your footage will be available. That said, some couples are just starting to receive their footage (in miniDV format) through Yeong, so there is hope :). For at least one couple, Yeong and Mira had the footage shipped from her parents’ house in Korea (!).

When you speak with Yeong, make sure that you give her your complete information (name of both the husband and wife, date of the wedding, and your contact information) so that she knows what to look for and how to reach you.

I know that it’s tempting to be angry/confrontational since you’ve waited years to get your footage, but it’s likely wiser to be calm and considerate when speaking with Yeong since you need her help for this, and this isn’t really in her job description at the law firm. She’s also emphasized the importance of not going out of your way to upset Mira, since the process of getting the footage only works with Mira’s cooperation.

Good luck!

hi everyone,

a BIG THANKS to jhemon and the other brides/grooms who worked on getting the information out there.

after receiving jhemon’s message, i called Ms. Lee regarding the videos. needless to say, she was exasperated with all of the complaints and demands that she personally received. she vented to me for about 30 minutes about how her office has been bombarded with calls and e-mails to a point where it is seriously interfering with their business.

anyways, to keep the long story short, she said she offered to help retrieve the videos because she sincerely felt bad to the couples who didn’t receive the video.  like jhemon mentioned above, i think the best way is avoid being angry and confrontational with her; she just asked me if i could post something letting you guys know that she was sincerely trying to help but it has gone to a point where she feels harrassed by all of the demands. so i would really reemphasize being nice and calm and accomodating to her – i mean, our ultimate goal is to just at least get the raw footage of our video, right?

i really want to thank you guys again bc i had lost ALL hope. but Ms. Lee said she was able to retrieve my raw footages and i am waiting to hear back from her so i can arrange to pick them up. i hope this message is helpful to at least some of you.

maybe i am a softie but it seems like jay really screwed over mira…
