Darling Husband broke his hand when he got upset and punched the floor.  Before they put the cast on they had to cut of his 14kt gold diamond ring (non-wedding band).  We still need to get it fixed (probably this weekend).

I’ve only heard of one potential case. My aunt recently broke her hip (both sides), and needed all her jewellery removed for some part of the emergency treatment (sorry, we talked about this over a month ago). They said they would need to cut off her wedding ring for it, but she and her husband got it off using tons and tons of soap eventually.

@calisunshine3404:  I don’t know about tungsten….but my husband has had his wedding ring cut off twice (we have been married almost 20 yrs and he has had surgery on his arms…anyway his hands swell).

Anyway, the ER had a tool that is specifically used for cutting off rings 🙁

My father was stung on the ring finger by a wasp. He sawed his own white gold ring off. Soldered it back together and knurled it to hide the seam.

My friend’s mother had to have hers cut off because of weight gain. Three kids later, and never removing it led to her needing it cut off… Lol. But, other than that, I think it’s pretty rare. And it wasn’t, in her case, due to an emergency situation. Just an uncomfortable ring situation.

I worked in a hospital for almost 5 years.  In that time, I had to assist in cutting rings off of fingers on multiple occasions.  In almost all instances, they were on women, not men, and it was usually due to finger swelling from something other than a hand injury.

i guess the key would be prevention. comfort fit rings fit snugly but are easier to take off if your finger swells because of the roundish inside.

but i guess if you notice that your hands are starting to swell you’d just have to take the ring off to be on the safe side, move the ring to the picky finger or put on a necklace.

Both my dad and my Future Father-In-Law have had to have their (gold) rings cut off.

My Future Father-In-Law got stung by a bee on his left ring finger and it swelled up too quickly to get it off in time. The ring was able to be repaired easily.

My dad is one of those guys who never takes his ring off. He tore a biceps tendon in his left arm two years ago and had to get the ring off for surgery, but he had gained weight in the 28 years since getting married so it had to be cut off. After a few months of not wearing it, the indent went away and he was able to get his ring properly sized.

We’re not married yet and Fiance doesn’t wear a ring, but my dad had to have his wedding ring cut off when his finger was hit by a cricket ball and it swelled to epic proportions.

It happens to young guys too! My fiance had to get a ring cut off recently because of finger swelling. He slammed his hand and the finger the ring was on swelled up. His finger was turning blue!
