How frustrating not to know exactly what the situation was – especially since your mom clearly knows something that she’s not sharing.

I can’t say my wedding kicked up any secrets. But when my mom was moving her parents into a nursing home when they were in their late 80s, she found an envelope that said, “[Her name], surprise!” When she opened it, she found their marriage certificate…from a year earlier than their “official” wedding date. Turns out, they had eloped! And not because of pregnancy, we don’t think, since my mom was an only child and born several years later. They eventually had a real wedding to placate the families.

I love that story, because my grandparents really did love each other to the very end. In the nursing home, they asked the attendents to push the two single beds together so that they could still sleep next to each other.

i got married with my grandmother’s wedding ring, and I love having that history connected to it.

@TwoCityBride:  I was thinking about that when I read your story! I just saw the Henry Louis Gates Jr. show on PBS the other day. It was the episode about Corey Booker (mayor of Newark). It was really sad…one grandfather had never known who his father was, and it turned out to be a white doctor from the town his mother grew up in. She was a young girl at the time she became pregnant. No one can know the exact circumstances, of course, but it’s unlikely to be a happy story.

I hope your mom can make peace with herself about her family. Hugs!!

Well, not sure how much this counts as it’s more of a new secret, but I had listed one of my mom’s cousins and his wife on the guest list but my mom told me “oh they’re separated, just list & guest since he’ll be bringing a date”…ok…I called him for his new address and a woman picked up. Turns out he’s been living with her for almost a year but most family members have no idea and just know he has a Girlfriend but have no idea who.  So she gives me her name and I recognize it.  She’s a b-list celebrity, famous for a certain extremely popular sci-fi/nerdtastic TV show lol. I later confirmed that that is indeed her, then looked her up on wikipedia to discover that she too is still married!
