How could you hate moissanite? Even if its not your thing, its hardly disdainful!

I’ll just join the PP’s who love it(:

@GelaMac:  Let’s make a date! Not sure there are many other people in Halifax that have Moissanite. There is a place in Moncton that works with it, but they order it in and don’t usually have them in stock.

I have a moissy and I LOVE the bang for the buck. 90% of the time, I am so so pleased, but I find when I am in florescent lighting, like a mall or a store, I hate the coloring. it looks “fake” to me. very cz. I have a rectangle shaped stone so they are more prone to that. i would describe it as too clear/glassy yet with a rainbow of color. more in pastels. and I know a diamond is more white/grey/silvery in those lights. so thats bugs me. alot.

BUT, I went to dinner last night and in dim light its crazy amazing sparkle and so pretty. also in the sun and even overcast lighting I like all its changes from sparkly to yellow to a hint of green depending on what I am wearing. I just dont like the look in florescent lights :/ i think if I had a round stone I would be fine, but not a fan of round….

I’ve never seen a moissanite in person, but I think the pictures and videos are beautiful. I’m getting a DNL ring, but would consider replacing the stone with an Amora gem if I have problems.

I am in love with the barely pink ones but the colorless ones are personally not my thing.  But I love seeing ring porn of them and can’t wait to see one in person.

I have a love/hate relationship with my moissanite ring.  I am an antique dealer, not a jeweler, but have a good eye for “good” jewelry vs. junk, and have held my ring right next to my friend’s $40,000 engagement ring (mine was about $1,200), and there is no way that anyone who is not a jeweler would be able to tell that a moissanite stone on your hand is not a diamond.  Your family and co workers are not going to pull out a magnifying glass to analyze whether your stone is moissanite or diamond just like they wouldn’t ask what quality of diamond it is.  My ring is stunning and I absolutely love it.

Now for what I hate…since I could obviously afford a larger stone opting for the moissanite, I went all out and got a 1.5 kt. with a rather high setting.  It’s a stunner…the problem is it looks like a $25,000+ ring!  So as an antique dealer, when I am asking for a “bargain”, it’s pretty hard to convince people I need a good deal after they see my ring.  Now I have to just wear my wedding band most days.

So my advice is if you go all out with a moissanite and shock people with the size and quality of it, be ready for the jealousy and judgment you may get from some people.  My cousin’s girlfriend told me at Christmas that she hasn’t gotten engaged yet because they are broke and can’t afford a ring (with a look that suggested money was no object for me)…little did she know that my ring definitely cost less than anyone else’s in our family.

Of course, it’s your ring and you and your fiancee should pick whatever you like best, but as a person who normally doesn’t splurge on things like jewelry, I just wasn’t ready for the judging reactions I receive from some people…like they know everything about me from the size of the ring on my finger.

I really don’t have an opinion either way. To each her own…but in my opinion (and in FACT) a moissanite is still a lab-created stone. Moissanite from meteorites is extremely rare and is not the stuff used in the stones that anyone purchases. Also, the patent for moissanite will expire in 2015 and who knows how many more companies will be making it and how easy it will be to find. Cubic zirconia a used to be more expensive and now they are just a few dollars.

If you choose moissanite because you honestly love the look, that’s great! If you choose it because you want a big stone and can’t get the diamond you want, good for you!

My personal choice was a smaller, excellent cut, G clarity, VVS1 diamond because I love the look and the fact that it is naturally occurring and rare and will better retain its worth and I fell in love with the ring. It was expensive but worth it. I could never be happy with a moissanite, but I could also never be happy now with a lesser quality diamond.

Whatever makes you, personally, happy is what you should do. But don’t get one thing as substitution for the other. Get it because you love it and dont be ashamed of it at all!
