I am not stressing yet as I have plenty of time but I have gone to three bridal shops so far and I didn’t like a single dress! I hate pickups and sleeveless is definitely not for me! I think the mermaid style looks hideous on me and the poofy dresses make look overwhelmed (I am 5 ft). Maybe I will get married in blue jeans!

Aw, I’m really sorry to hear you’re having such a hard time. Like you said, you have some time. Maybe you should take a small breather from dress shopping. Maybe it’ll help you clear your mind the next time you go in. Maybe you could also post some pictures for the Bees? I think most of us have distorted views of ourselves and perhaps it’ll help alleviate some of those!

I really don’t like them either. I felt like I was seeing the same dress over and over again. So I wore a blue dress I actually liked instead!

@KatyElle: Hey that’s a great idea! Who says I have to get married in a wedding dress!

If you don’t like wedding dresses, try looking at just normal dresses :). There are tons of options out there! One bee even got a gorgeous prom dress that was white and black.

@KT808: You don’t! I love being a girl, we have choices. There are so many amazing gowns out there, you don’t have to go for the poofy white dress anymore, go by your own rules.

I haven’t even started going to shops (since I have a year and half to go) but I hate all wedding dresses. I always have. I hate dresses period. I feel your pain.

You sound exactly like me. I wrote this post a few weeks ago.
I’m going dress shopping on Monday, and I hope I find something I love.
I’m sure you’ll find something soon. Just keep looking and look everywhere! Some departments stores have really pretty dresses too, so look there too just in case.

I feel your pain, I really do. I know you didn’t specifically ask for advice, but what I would do is: stay out of the salons, at least for a little while. Try to let go of that feeling that a wedding dress has to be a certain way. Look at what you like to wear– do you have any dresses you like a lot? Skirts? Tops? Think about what makes you feel good, don’t talk about it with people who tell you some stuff about what you “should” wear for your body type, and poke around online for a little while. If you want it to be white, narrow the search that way, if you want it to be… I don’t know, cap sleeved, put that in. I bet you’ll find something you love.
Our dates are not that far apart, so I haven’t found necessarily “it” yet, but I realized that the skirt on one dress that I actually like is really similar to one of my favorite every-day type skirts. Kind of funny, but makes sense to me!

I do wear a lot of dresses! Most have a loose flow-y feel to them. Most are made in India and have a lot of embroidery on them. I think I was a hippie in a previous life!

Have you looked at JCREW wedding dresses? They are very flowy and different from the average poofy gowns.

or something more simple.. do you like any elements of any of these dresses?

Try looking online at normal shops. Nordstrom has a great selection of white dresses that are not typical wedding silouettes. Also, places like The Limited and Ann Taylor and Black House White Market as well as the now classic J. Crew have wedding dresses that are more simple silouettes. Don’t get discouraged, just think outside the box. 🙂
