I ran into something curious today. Before shopping for my engagement ring, I was sure I was a size 8. Totally sure. The reason I was sure is because I received two promise rings in high school from different boyfriends (ah, high school), and I know that both of those were purchased as a size 8. When my fiance and I went ring shopping and I tried some on, I found that now, 8 years or so later, my ring size was more like a 6-6.5, even from the same store as one of my previous rings came from. I chalked that up to my fingers changing in the past 8 years. Now I’m not so sure about that, because I just pulled those same rings out of my jewelry box (I was playing dressup with all of the rings in my jewelry box… btw it’s not cute to wear 12 rings at the same time, in case you were wondering), and they still fit… on my ring finger which has been sized at a 6, sometimes a 6.5. They’re not even a little too big, they’re a perfect fit. What gives? I was there when one of them was purchased so I KNOW that it was a size 8. Has anybody else experienced this? Are they vanity sizing rings?

I have not experienced this at all. I’ve been married for many years, and have had my ring resized along the way, but all the rings I purchased during the years I wore the same size ring were the same, from my high school and university class rings to my engagement ring. My size has changed due to osteo-arthritis, but has consistently gone up little by little over the years (no significant change in weight). My class ring now fits my pinkie instead of my ring finger, just like any ring in that same size from a jeweler would.

I am still the same ring size since high school and that was 20+ years ago (no major weight loss/gain).

Same as echomomm. I was a 3.5 before arthritis set in, and now I’m a 5. I don’t think that rings sizes are a victim to vanity sizing like clothes are.

that’s so interesting! I wonder why mine are different. I’m in Canada and both rings came from chain stores that were since absorbed in American chains. Maybe Canadian sizes were different from American sizes? I’m just so baffled by my size 8 rings fitting my size 6.5 finger.

Yeah, that’s weird. There’s definitely a marked difference between my 8 year old size 8 ring and my 1 year old size 6 ring. Hmm…

Before DH bought my ring I got my finger sized at a whole bunch of different stores. One told me 6, another 6.5, another, 7, and one even told me I was a size 9! DH’s ring is size 9 and is definitely too big for me. I just figured differrent stores/ chains might have slightly different sizing systems. Your theory about Canadian sizes might be a good point though- our clothes definitely have less vanity sizing than American ones!

and I only get 6 or 6.5 now, not even a 7, much less an 8. HOW?!

My ring size has fluctuated over the years, but that’s because my actual fingers have gotten bigger (weight gain) and smaller (weight loss). Rings that I had before I gained weight and that I know are a smaller size now fit. Or, in some cases. are too big. But the size of the rings themselves (as in size 7 or 8 or whatever) hasn’t changed.

This is the first time I’ve heard of vanity sizing but it’s something I’ve noticed when it comes to clothes. Not so much rings for me. I’m glad to know there’s a term for it!

When my husband and I got engaged I was a size 6. Now after two kids and weight gain, I’m a size 7.5-8. Finger size fluctuates through a life time.

My fingers change all the time and it is annoying. So much so that I bought my own damned sizer.

I was actually referring to the size of actual rings, not my finger. I know that that changes a lot, I’m just a bit confused by my “size 8” rings literally being the exact same size as my super recently sized “6.5” ring.

I’ve not noticed any vanity sizing in rings, either. But now I’m jealous of having my own personal sizer. Santa’s been asking for ideas. Hmm.

Same here!! I had a class ring in high school and it was a size 7. 8 years later now I’m a 6! My Fiance went ring shopping and he needed to get my actual size before purchasing. The size 7 was way too big for me. And clearly telling him kazillion times I was a 7.
I was 115 lbs in high school. I was 97 lbs in college so over night at school I lost my class ring. :((( it just fell off. I was stressing and not eating for days trying to pass my last classes to graduate. My Fiance (best friend at the time) kept on getting on me for not eating so he had to buy lunch for me everyday after that becaue I tend to not eat at home) hard times man….
Well back to the ring shopping. I’m 106lbs now. In the winter my fingers tend to be like super thin but over night they get thick because of the salt intake. I kept on bragging to get a 6.25 ring because I had a feeling in the summer of next next my fingers will blow up like sausages. But now my ring as a 6.25 is so loose I’m like….what’s going on? Even a 6 my jeweler is telling me is still loose.
Yes I should have listened to my Fiance when he told me to get a size 6…..:( I’m a very stubborn one but they’ll all see when I was right the whole time in the summer!!!!
A rin guard also hepls if its still loose. That’s what I have now.
