@kala_way: had stacks of books. She added a small vase of flowers, scrabble tiles and trivial pursuit cards.

adding a few flowers in a small vase would be inexpensive and something you can do yourselves in very little time

here is another example of a book centerpiece- in this case the outliers are pumpkins

I think it is the additions that help link the stack of books to the table

You can add flowers to the lanterns in different ways

a few flowers tied to the top

or at the base of the candle

 you can use fresh or silk flowers for all of these ideas

Look into other ways you can dress up the table around your centerpiece. When we were trying to come up with ours I felt the same way you did. There are always options like adding the favors to the table, scattering a little something in open spaces, or maybe you could even make a little something to start conversations at each table. If you feel like you need a floral element maybe you could do some darker rose petals delicately scattered on the books and on the table? Having a single dark rose per table would look very nice (and dramatic) as well. 

Are you using table numbers at all? That could be another good way to branch out and add another visual interest to the table.
