I was watching the show Catfish on MTV the other day and I swear I went to junior high with this girl that was on the show. After some digging through some old yearbooks I found out I totally did, which is what sparked this question! Have any of you been on a reality TV show? What was it like behind the scenes? Did the producer tell you how to act? Were you surprised at how it was edited at the end?

I haven’t, but have you heard of the TV show called UnREAL? It’s a fictional drama that totally copies from The Bachelor; like they have a suitor instead of the bachelor, and elimination ceremonies, bizarre dates, etc. Although it’s scripted, the creator was a former producer on The Bachelor, and she no doubt used some of her experiences for some of the characters/plotlines on the show. It’s really interesting. And unnerving sometimes, haha. It’s crazy how they can take interviews and totally twist your words around, or prod you to say something, instigate drama between the girls, etc..

you should watch unREAL.. its a great show, and while of course the plot twists itself get exageratted the general how producers produce reality TV is very real.. an ex of mine has been in the TV industry for decades, and he tried out reality TV for a bit before quitting because of how screwed up it is. You really bait contestants and really emotionally manipulate them in order to make good TV.

great minds… 😉 (or tv addicts.. lol)

I have, in my final year of high school. It was an embarassing show, and I can’t ever bring myself to re-watch it again, haha. The producer would definitely ask questions again if I didn’t answer the way he wanted, or he would rephrase it, fishing for a certain type of response. And they would give suggestions on what to do, but for the most part the ‘schedule’ of the day was planned before, but that was about it. There were a few ‘action shots’ we re-did a few times (walking away from the camera, etc.).

I haven’t heard of that before, I am going to have to watch it!
Yes! I was wondering if they actually did that. I watched a TrueLife that had Miranda Sings (YouTube comedian) on it and after the show she did a vlog about her experience and what you were saying about rephrasing questions and fishing for answers is exactly what she said they did to her. She also said they told her what to say in shots and picked the parts of her life that would make for the “best tv” (fights, drama, etc.)

Yeah exactly! They can’t tell you what to say, so they just keep asking until you give them something they like.

I was on Teen Mom… in the background lol. I did a modeling gig with Farrah and they showed some of it on TV.
My photo was on Project Runway. I modeled for Mondo, so when they showed his portfolio for the first season he was on, they showed me.
But I’ve never been on as a “star.” I did audition for America’s Next Top Model once, and the questionnaire was totally loaded; “how is your relationship with your father?” “What do other people do that you hate?” Totally seeing who would stir drama. I was too boring to be cast lol.

what a fun thread! I havent been but I am family friends with a girl that was on MTV’s “I Used to be Fat.” it didnt run for too long though. she said it was really weird.
I also live about 20 mins away from a town where they filmed an episode of Catfish. I think they were actually near me twice, the second time was about 40 mins away from me! So weird!
I would love to hear more about people’s actually experiences though!

Did you get to talk to her? She seems nice at times then kinda psycho at other times LOL! I didn’t realize you had to take a questionnaire to be on that show. I have tried out for The Voice a couple times but they never had you answer any questions. I am almost positive, though, they google search you while you are singing.

UnReal is the best!
About 10 years or so ago, I went to a Speed Dating event. Upon arrival, I found out it was being filmed for an episode of a Showtime or HBOshow called Family Business, about a porn star whose family owns a sex toy company. Or something. I signed a waiver, and they filmed my date with the porn star. It was hilarious. I am a lawyer so I showed up for in a suit and wearing glasses. The date was just us talking for about 15 minutes while we had a drink, before the bell rang and we rotated tables. I have no idea if it ever aired, though.

- Wedding: March 2014 - Church and University
I worked for a bridal store who did an episode with David Tutera – it was a season they didn’t introduce the owner/manager so I was never on, but I got the bride into her dresses. The producer was outside of the dressing room eavesdropping and kept saying “You can’t talk about the dress! Don’t give you opinion! No whispering!” and on and on.
David had a cold that day and was not incredibly friendly with me or the staff – he really burst my bubble that day. The bridesmaid dresses (they BROUGHT) were hideous and I felt terrible she had to choose one. She would roll her eyes and mouth things to me in the dressing room – they didn’t really show her in the best light and she was actually quite nice!
Seeing David do take after take was eye-opening – making it seem so “off the cuff” when it SO wasn’t. That was my little glimpse into Reality TV!

My friend was an assistant producer on The Hills, and her entire job was to create drama between the girls. She would basically call them and tell them what the others had been saying about her, and arrange a “meeting” so they could yell at each other or whatever. She said it basically killed her soul, and now she only does reality shows that are like home improvement, or food or something that isn’t so terrible.

I haven’t but the Beekman Boys filmed their reality show in my town and I see them often.
