The closest I ever came was a day many years ago when I was in NYC with my friend and our kids. It was summer so i was wearing some short kind of dress. She was taking them to the bathroom and I was waiting on the sidewalk near the street, tons of people around. Then this cute decorated car zooms up next to me and the guy leans out the window and hands me a laminated postcard with a bunch of stuff on it. He said he’d like me to come audition for some show that was being produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. ” I have a feeling you’d be perfect for it”. I was startled by the whole thing and he drove away and left with all these people now looking at me. Too weird. I am the very last person who would ever want to be on tv, so of course I never called. I don’t even know if the show ever got off the ground. But I kept the card for a while lol.

doberman:  Could it have been the Bang Bus? They do things like that.

ETA: If you don’t know what that is, don’t Google it from work.

ETA: It’s porn.

a good friend of mine was on a dating show on MTV. I totally forgot what it was called but it was where they went on blind dates and one of them was hooked up on a lie detector and the other person’s friend could see the answers to see if they were lying or not. Anyways, the lie detector was TOTALLY fake and my friend said he actually had to fill out a questionnaire before the show (ex. his age, job, likes, dislikes) so when his date asked him, he would answer and they would know if he was lying or not based on what he answered before. The show was such b.s. and 2 endings were filmed: one when she picks him to go on a second date and they kiss and another where she rejects him.

ETA: It was called “Exposed”!

Does being a caller on TRL twice count?

MrsBellValley:  I did, but I didn’t talk to her much. I didn’t really know much about the show or who she is, so I wasn’t star struck like a bunch of the other girls who were all over her.  She was very stuck up, though. And talking about her boob job before that was common knowledge. She didn’t really want anything to do with us. It was kind of odd that they flew her in for this gig which was pretty low paid. Just a local hair industry show.

These stories are hilarious. Keep them coming!

I was never ON one, but the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was in my town once years ago. My dad is a cop and was one of the guys who was hired to patrol the set that night. He brought me with him because I loved the show and had a huge crush on Ty Pennington. It was so rad, I got to meet the whole cast including Ty, got to eat dinner in their tent with them, etc. They were all very nice. Ty showed up late and looked/acted like a zombie (apparently he was filming another episode across the country the same day so he was exhausted) except for when the cameras turned on and he was FULL OF ENERGY and super charasmatic. It was cool to watch them actually all working on the house and whatnot.

One thing I thought was funny was that at the end when they did the Grand Reveal, they did it twice so the second time, the family had to fake their initial reaction ha.

Very interesting.

I haven’t, but I know someone who was on a Canadian show called The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp.  Like the others…it’s totally fake.

On this show they start by talking about how much junk the person eats (“So-and-so goes out for wings and beers with friends 3 nights per week.  Thta’s like eating this entire disgusting pile of wings every month!  And look at this huge vat of beer they consume!”) and they go through their cupboards and thow out all the bad food.  This part is compltely fabricated.  They will litterally bring junk food to your house to throw away.

Then you spend a month “working out with a trainer” and “following a nutrituion plan from a nutritionist.”  Both of them are just actors.  Basically they spend a month putting you on a 1200 calorie per day diet and you do a few workouts that are COMPLETELY for the cameras.  You lose 10 lbs then you gain it back as soon as you start eating like a normal person.

Also, they never cast anyone who just has to lose the last 10 lbs.  That’s not really interesting.  Apparently the good part of being on the show was that you get a whole new workout wardrobe from Lululemon so that you can look cute in the workout shots.

I never was, but a friend of mine auditioned for The Bachelor several years ago.  She made the first cuts and was one of the finalists. She said the producers (or whoever picks the bachelorettes) started asking her very personal questions about her family and previous sexual partners, probably looking for any kind of dirt or story line they could spin. She finally quit because it was just too weird.  She said it was funny to see the other girls auditioning as some were so desperate to get on the show.

I know someone who was on the Bachelorette, so I know quite a bit of the behind the scenes stuff. I have never seen a single episode and had no idea who he was when I met him.  But he told me all about how the producers would make him interupt scenes to cause drama and they would tell him to say certain things.  Even the final rose/proposal was very much set up…. even though it made him look (or at least feel) a bit a fool.

I know a few people who were on MTV dating shows, and a family friend who was on a VH1’s Tool Academy.

My mom and I were approached by an MTV employee while we were shopping at the mall. He asked if we wanted to be on Parental Control, but I told him that I didn’t have a boyfriend, so that wouldn’t work. He told me “it doesn’t matter!”. We didn’t take him up on it.

A few years ago I put in an app for Bad Girls Club on a whim. Apparently they really liked me and wanted me to meet with them in person. I ended up declining after I found out you only make minimum wage on those shows. I had a full time job, house, bills, etc.

MrsBellValley:  My ex’s cousin was on the bachelor a few seasons ago while we were together. She was super nice in real life but on the show they painted her as such a weirdo. I remember watching it thinking, what the heck this is not her at all!!! She basically told us that they shove drinks down your throat just to get you going and create more drama. She said they just keep handing them to you and telling you to drink them. She didn’t last long because again they kind of made her out to be a weirdo and she was pretty shy as it is.

I LOVE the show Unreal. It’s fictional but it seems like it shows a good deal of what would go on behind the scenes of the show and how the producers are used to create situations instead you think are natural.
