@Tunacupcakes:You picked a beauty!  I just love the wire basket setting, and the surprise diamond is the topper!

Sorry if the picture is obnoxiously huge, I just couldn’t figure out how to resize it. Also, my diamond looks kind of opaque in this picture, which makes me sad because its super clear in person. =(

Regardless, I actually thought I wanted something else. I thought I was in love with an emerald cut center stone flanked by two baguettes. And that’s what I told him that I wanted when he started asking. Well, he proposed to me with this ring, and I never thought it was possible to love a material item this much.

He obviously didn’t need my input. He did just dandy on his own, if I do say so myself!

My SO doesn’t understand why people go ring shopping. lol He believes that if you are getting married, then you should trust that he would pick out something you would like. So…..I haven’t given him hints and I haven’t really looked at anything, because I don’t want to fall in love with certain style and then get something else. He has picked out other jewelry for me and I always love it…sooo I like surprises lol!

Although we were watching tv and there was a commercial for a jewelry store (seems to be engagement ring season for these stores!) and they showed this one ring that I personally thought was ugly whether it was the ring or just the way they displayed it (my guess would be the second, this store always manages to make their stuff look bad on tv!) and I said something to that effect and he was like “Oh you don’t like that” and he seemed kind of hurt. So I think it is a good idea to at least give hints or feelings can be unintentionally hurt lol. And maybe now he’ll understand why people go ring shopping!

@MissCallieJean: I know what you mean, but I think there’s a difference between loving something because he got it for me and actually loving it (as in I would have picked it myself).  I wanted to actually love the style of my ring.  I happened to go shopping with him and he bought it while I was there, but it also could have worked if I just showed him styles I liked.  The reason I didn’t do that is because he didn’t know much about diamonds and I didn’t want him to get a bad deal!

@SecretBee23: this ring is from….. (drumroll)…. amazon.com. it’s like $550. and the stone is around 5 carats, so that just goes to show it is NOT good alexandrite. truly good alexandrite can be more expensive than diamonds. i just loved the setting of this piece. when the time comes (assuming he asks what i want), i’ll direct him to my friend who is a gemologist, for help in finding the right stone.

word on the street is the best natural alexandrite has origins in russia, brazil, and africa.

if you are looking for high quality gems and don’t mind lab-created, my gemologist friend said Chatham Gems does an excellent job creating a range of stones including alexandrite.

@hellopurple: Thanks so much for the info! I’ve thought about Alexandrite a lot for my future rings, and even started a thread dedicated to it in search of a good place to buy it…hence my interest in your ring!

FH and I had been engaged for a while before we started talking about rings. He had no clue about jewelry and neither did I, but I knew I love cushions and I’d like a solitaire. I picked out 2 rings that I really liked, a plain solitaire or a halo with a plain band and I let him make the final choice. This is the ring he picked from moissaniteco.

I can’t decide if I want a single diamond band, or a split shank. I know I want a cushion cut halo style ring :] It will just be up to him to decide in the end!

My other half organised to go ring shopping the day after proposing. We had talked about rings many times before, but I’m a bit picky with jewellery (I make a lot of my own and very much have my own style) so he wanted to make sure what we got was right. Strangely enough, all my ring suggestions went out the window when it came to trying them on – the ones I liked in pictures didn’t look all that nice on my hand.

However, the beautiful conclusion of the story is the ring I got is totally different to anything I’ve seen before and I couldn’t love it more. Even better – both of us love it. We both had input into it and made the entire experience ours (no family meddling in our choices!).
