Darling Husband and I are seriously considering selling our little Cobalt so we can get an Equinox. We are expecting our first child in May! I’ve never sold a car before and was wondering if anyone had a good suggestion as to where to list it?

I don’t know where to list it, but make sure you have a solid contract that says you have no liability if anything goes wrong with the car.

We listed our cobalt on craigslist a few months ago and a dealership contacted us and bought it. We only got what he owed but we didn’t have to worry about liability. We got a fair amount of people contacting us from craigslist so that might be a place to start.

If you have a Carmax nearby–they go by a different name in some states, they buy cars & in my experience are surprisingly fair.

When I sold my car I posted on Craigslist and Autotrader and maybe some more sites don’t remember. I got very good responses on Autotrader and was able to sell fast within a few days. I priced it fair to sell and it was popular model. If you are selling yourself you need to invest time and effort- take it to mechanic to inspect/fix any issues, clean interiors well, test drive for potential buyers etc. You could sell to dealer and avoid hassle but you are not going to get the best price.

@sassy411: I was going to suggest Carmax as well. I work at a car dealership and we always recommend going there to get your car at least appraised so you have a good idea of what it’s really worth. They are very fair. It can also save you the headache of dealing with Craigslist or other sites like that.

We’ve sold quite a few cars, all after listing on craigslist. We usually get a lot of responses fairly quickly. Just my preference, is when you have the people come look at the car, I like to meet at a shopping center parking lot rather than at our house. I know a family that was robbed after trying to sell an item on craigslist, and the did catch the person & it was the guy who had come over to look at the item. I’m just a little paranoid 🙂

I was just gonna say my Fiance just bought an Equinox last month & we LOVE it! 🙂

We’ve sold almost all of our cars on Craigslist. It’s really easy and free.

Craigslist is always a good place to start – My husband has bought one and sold several cars on ebay. I don’t know much about the process though it always worked out well for him.

I’m about to start the process of selling my car so I’m really interested to see these responses! OP- Why did you decide to sell rather than trade in?
