I am 14w1d pregnant today. I had ultrasounds and could hear the heartbeat loud and clear at 6 weeks, 9 weeks and 11w2d, and all measurements were wonderful at the last ultrasound 3 weeks ago.
About 2 weeks ago for fun I downloaded an app that lets you hear the baby’s heartbeat. I thought of course it wouldn’t work – but on 5 different occasions since then I’ve been able to hear the heartbeat loud and clear. My Father-In-Law who is a doctor also listened to the recordings and he says it’s definitely the baby heartbeat at 140 (in the meantime I was checking my own on my FitBit, so I knew 140 couldn’t be mine).
Since last Saturday I am not able to find it anymore, anywhere. Husband and I tried all the different positions and times of the day, and nothing. I am also worried because I am gaining no weight at all and all my symptoms are gone (although it tends to be normal after 12 weeks).
I have an ultrasound in about 2 hours to check what’s going on. I know it’s silly to rely on an app (not even an home doppler!) but the fact I could find it until 1 week ago really worries me.
These apps are relatively new so I am pretty sure not many people have related stories – but I felt like I had to write it somewhere rather than keep weeping with my husband.

Oh man. Please don’t use those things! It’s even recommended not to use the home dopplers because they can cause unneccesary panic. Put it away and breathe, Mama <3

Agree with PP. Your father in law shouldn’t be encouraging you to be using an APP(!!!) To monitor your baby when he’s a doctor. Best of luck and update please.

Oh yikes. Don’t use those apps! If you want to monitor at home, get a doppler. I use a Sonoline B.

Honestly they say finding a heartbeat on a Doppler at 14 weeks is questionable I’ve been told (by a doctor). The baby is still so small that it could easily have just moved too far away to register. Regarding weight gain/symptoms, at 14 weeks I had lost a couple pounds and didn’t get back to normal weight/start gaining weight until 17-18 weeks, which my doctor said was totally normal. Symptoms always come and go, and like you said they usually change around 12 weeks.
Good luck with the ultrasound! Put the app away after this!

All good bees! Baby has grown so much and heartbeat is at 163, which is great for 14 weeks. I made the obgyn listen to the recordings and he said that’s definitely the baby’s heartbeat but the baby moves constantly now – infact, it’s not even on the right side as it used to be. I am going to cancel the app, it creates unneccessary stress. I really don’t know why I am worried all the time, this is my first pregnancy and with all the issues and problems women normally go through I feel like it’s too good to be true(we got pregnant at the first attempt) and I don’t deserve this somehow.

Thanks for the update Bee! So happy everything is wonderful with baby!

I am pleased to see your update. Do yourself a favour and don’t use those apps. The recommendation here in the UK is that you don’t even use a doppler as a heartbeat doesn’t necessarily mean a healthy baby or you can actually pick up your own heartbeat. Leave it to the professionals.

Glad babe is healthy and growing well. Just because you didn’t struggle to get pregnant or have a loss, doesn’t mean that you’re not entitled to worry. You’re going to be a parent, worrying sometimes comes with the territory! I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that everything is going well!

I’m glad everything is OK, OP! You need to keep reminding yourself that just because you didnt struggle to create this baby, doesnt mean you don’t deserve it! Enjoy your symptom-free times and you last few months of normalcy!

Glad to hear everything looks good! Definitely cancel the app! I understand the worry, I’m naturally a slightly anxious person, and pregnancy hormones made it wayyyy worse. Physically I had a great pregnancy, but I worried about every little thing. It’s tough. Don’t add to your stress! Good luck!
