It turns out that we’re going to have a harpist do pre-ceremony and ceremony music for our wedding. I’m really excited in that I think it is going to sound lovely and really add another touch of elegance, but I’m really unfamiliar with listening to harps.
Did anyone else hire one? Are certain songs better or worse being played by one? I’m a little lost picking out our ceremony hymns and processional and recessional. I was originally thinking of a Jack Johnson song for the recessional. I wonder what that would sound like.
Thanks for any help or tips!

I would aske her what songs she knows and how much she charges for learning new songs.
I think she would sound great no matter the song.

We are having a harpist before and during the ceremony
I went to amazon and iTunes and searched for Harp music to hear what I preferred on the Harp 🙂 Maybe that would help – I really do not like modern music for the harp for the most part so you probably want to determine your taste 🙂

Talk to your harpist about what’s in her repetoire. We had a harpist at my mom’s wedding and most of the music wasn’t in her repetoire, but she was willing to learn it provided she had a certain length of time after we gave her the sheet music. It sounded really nice. Although harp is different from violin, a lot of things that sound good with a string quartet, sound nice with harp as well. An experienced musician can take almost any song and make it work with their instrument, giving it the right nuances and sound.

We had a harpist and a flutist. We had them play whatever they wanted before and after the ceremony. For the wedding party, we had them play Pachelbel Canon D, for my entrance Hymne by Vangelis, and for the recessional we had them play Tara’s Theme from Gone With the Wind by Max Steiner. Tara’s Theme was played to honor my mom who passed away from cancer 15 years ago. We also had them play Somewhere In Time for the lighting of the Unity Candle.

I’m having a harpist and flutist too. Outdoor ceremony. i’m thinking “What a wonderful world” and mayb “edel veiss”. Kind of would like some other options of non-classical/totally traditional stuff…let me know if you find any more inspiration!
