I find it odd that she did not give you a list of songs that they have already mastered so that you are not arbitrarily picking songs that they haven’t yet performed. With that said, I would ask them for a music list first for ease. If they are willing to play anything, then go over to Pandora and put in Jazz and listen to that for a while to find out what you like.

Generally, unless you have specific requests, these groups are totally skilled in just winging it! Most of them have a huge repertoire and a lot of the ones I have seen don’t even use sheet music as often as they just sort of jam. I’m sure they will gauge the mood and play accordingly, so all you might need to tell them are your basic expectations and what kind of music you want them to play.. upbeat, mellow…etc.

I would choose piano, bass, sax.  Here are some of my favorite jazz standards:

Blues in the Night

Polka Dots and Moonbeams

‘S Wonderful

Someone to Watch Over Me

Cheek to Cheek

Misty

Fly Me to the Moon

Night and Day

I Get a Kick Out of You

Easy Living

Moonlight Serenade

I Only Have Eyes for You

I’m Old Fashioned

The Way You Look Tonight
