Be careful. This could go really bad if they are not experienced at wedding dresses.

I usually don’t recommend it and here is why. Yes for a small majority of people it works, however using a skilled and qualified seamstress does cost good money. So you pay someone probably more than you would spend on an average dress but there is no guarantee they can produce a dress that will meet your specifications. Often times you can build up an idea in your head that is hard to translate to someone else. At least when you try a dress on and purchase it you know exactly what you are getting.

I saw your last post looking for the discontinued Maggie Sottero, if that is the dress you are referencing I think you should try finding something similar first and use the custom dress route as your last resort.

I’m having mine made (that is the currently plan) by my friend’s mom.  I asked my friend first- she worked professional in the lingereie industry and now runs her own buisness for dance wear- but she polititely declined and said But.

But. My mom is coming from Greece- she’s a couture gown designer.   Her mom now lives with her- and we are going to make me a gown. I’m beyond stoked.

If you’re going to have someone make you’re dress make sure you you can vet their work ahead of time and you have a clear understanding of what you’re getting and what’s included in the work.

Coming from the viewpoint of a seamstress, don’t expect it to be cheaper. Making custom anything is difficult and time consuming. You have to be able to pay for the experience needed in bridal fabrics and patterning/fitting a garment. Its a lot of long hours and not worth skimping on. You might find someone who says they can do it for whatever price range is cheaper than the dress but they may not actually know what they are doing. I’ve seen this happen and end badly. Definitely vet anyone you like, ask for pics and references, actual clients you can call and talk to. I’ve worked in costuming off and on for about 8 years and would not say I could replicate a wedding dress for someone. I’m not saying you can’t find someone, just be prepared to pay for it.

I agree you should look for other dresses that are similar to the one you love. Have you been able to try this particular dress on or have you fallen in love with a picture?

If you have tried it on and just can’t order it anymore, look for brides selling it. Or find one similar enough you can have it altered to fit your look.

Good luck!

This can potentially end up very badly.  I’ve seen many dresses made to order, like you’re thinking to do,  but most of them look homemade at best. (I’m not trying to disparage other bees who are happy with their made- to – order dresses,  this is my personal experience)  Don’t  play with your money, unless you have too much of it.  Look for a similar dress instead.  I was drooling over an amazing gown from DB, but it was discontinued a few years ago,  and I could not find it anywhere else. So I opened my mind to give another dress a chance,  and now I’m extremely happy with my current choice. It’s so much more of a wow dress than the one I originally wanted.  So keep looking!
