@Smango1:  Where do you live? Many major cities have a neighborhood that is just textiles or fabric. Tons of variety and not marked up. If not, it might be a worthwhile roadtrip. Once you’ve seen all of the gorgeous fabrics available and/or tried on conventional wedding dresses, I think you’ll be really disappointed with even the high end fabrics from chain fabric stores.

There are tons of really talented seamstresses out there but you’ll have to do some leg work. I had my prom dress custom made and while I got exactly what I wanted, it took a lot more fittings than my friends who bought off the rack. It was also very expensive but I had hours of hand beading done.

Have you looked on etsy? It could be a good middle ground for you. So many gorgeous dresses on there. I have to steer clear so I stay focused on my beauty. Good luck!!

@Smango1:  this dress was designed by and custom made for the bride. See http://cdweddings.com.au/blog/?p=867. At least you can see more photos.  Contact jasminesbridalshop.com for a quote to make a copy perhaps?

One of the bridal shops that I went to did custom work starting at $3000.  I haven’t seen much high quality, detailed custom work for less than that, but if you’re comfortable in that price range, I’m sure there are individuals near you that do this kind of skilled work.

There’s a fabric store in Rockville just off the 495 Beltway called G Street Fabrics. High end luxurious fabrics. You’ll find what you need there….silk, silk satin and lace to die for 🙂

if you’re looking for a custom tailor, Isabel Donnelly is located in Ellicott City. She’s extremely good and I think her prices are quite reasonable.
