What is your budget?  Some islands are significantly more expensive than others (i.e. St. Lucia fabulous, private, very expensive vs Aruba, pretty, lots to do, affordable).  Do you want adults only or doesn’t matter?  Fiance and I are in the midst of finalizing our AI plans, too so it’s fresh on the brain.  🙂

Aruba is very desert like and full of families (I went a few years back). I think $5000 is a very generous budget for an AI in the Carribbean.  I just realized your date is the day before ours!  I’ve also read about the hurricane season and if you want to stay out of the paths, they say go south like Aruba, Curacao, Trinidad and Tobago, or Grenada.  My Fiance kept recommending Bermuda since he’s been many times (I said no since he had been), but he said it’s fairly expensive.

I have been to Hawaii many years ago, and I absolutely loved it.  My mom took me and we did it on a very tight budget, easily for 10 days.  But I would not do the 10 hour plane ride and the 6 hour time change again (just my personal opinion).

@danilynn72:  We are going on honeymoon Aug 5th 🙂 Have you been to Maui before? what kind of accomidations are you looking for? We did maui last year and i think we ended up spending $2500 each for 14 days.

I wanted to do Hawaii as well because its awesome there but we have already been there.  Jamaica was a second choice but i was kind of scared off by it being hurricane season. I heard that most morning it rains durning this time of year. I did alot of research though and seems like you either wanna go to a Sandals resort or a “Couples” resort.

I finally broke down and talked to a travel agent in person lol He found us a really good deal at a Secrets resort in the Riviera Maya. I researched it and I found an even better deal online!! So this is where we are going. I have been told its going to be humid during this time of the year but its only a 15min drive from the airport and we have a swim out room 😉

I’ve travelled to Maui/Kauai and it does not need to be that expensive!!

I’ve always stayed in a rental condo in Maui and loved it! You don’t waste a ton of time going out to eat and if you get a place with a BBQ you can quickly do that each night! Perhaps just go out a few times for dinner for a treat.

I have friends that rented a condo for their honeymoon. They really enjoyed it. Their condo was $95/night and nice! So for 10 days that’s only just over $1000 (with taxes, cleaning, etc.). Flights are what.. like $1000 each or so? So you’re up to $3000.

Add on a rental car (fairly necessary for Maui), groceries (which you buy at home anyways), and a few excursions… I think you could make it under $5000!  If you have a rental car you can do the road to hana on your own, haleakala on your own, all the beaches, whalers village, lahaina, ioa valley, etc. I don’t think a ton of excursions are necessary just pick one or two that you really want to do.

Also, perhaps just pick one island and really experience it.. that’s what I would recommend at least. Maybe do Maui/Kauai + Oahu (for just a night or two). But I wouldn’t try to squish a third island in there too. You can always go back! There is so much to do on the islands, I think it would be a better use of your time to not bounce around so much when you’re only there for 10 days.

We did an AI in the Dominican Republic.  Our resort had an adults only section.  Lots of honeymooners.  We had no desire to leave the resort but if you like excursions can be booked for snorkeling, scuba, or snuba…. Everything you can do in HI.  Our whole week was only $3k and we had a great time.

How about a Caribbean cruise? You could see multiple islands and they are extremely affordable! I once went on a 7 day cruise that had two stops in the Bahamas, plus St. Martin and St. Thomas (which is stunning!). A balcony room was only $650 each, in September. It would probably be a little more, since we had a FL resident discount (plus we went in the peak month for hurricanes in our area), but they are still pretty inexpensive. Plus all of the food and entertainment on the ship is included.

@danilynn72:  have you considered a cruise?  you will get to visit many islands, there’s lots of things to do and the food is always good.

your travel agent is right, the el dorado is great and on a beautiful part of beach.

i wouldn’t rent a condo for my honeymoon.  i want to be pampered and don’t want to cook or make the beds.  i’d expect somewhere with great service.

besides going to a nice beach, what do you think you would like to do?  that may help you choose a spot.

Barbados? Couples just opened a new resort there. Doesn’t have the best reviews, but my friend just got back from there and she said she had an amazing time. We are going in November. Our trip is 2900 including airfare. Not a bad deal.
