I went to Maui and I loved it.  We went all over that island – Wailea, Kaanapali, and Hana.  Wailea has all the fancy resorts and nice beaches but not much else.  We stayed in a condo there for 3 nights through vrbo.com.  We couldn’t afford to stay in the resorts there.  Kaanapali has some gorgeous resorts and beaches and is close to Lahaina which has touristy activities (like surfing and snorkeling), shops, and art galleries if you are bored.  Hana is just drop dead gorgeous.  If you go to Maui you must drive the road to Hana.  Hana is an isolated village and it is worth it staying there for a few nights if you want to be in a completely quiet, serene and beautiful place.  Going to Hana is all about the journey, not the destination since there isn’t much to do in Hana.  There are so many sights to see on the road to Hana and all are breathaking.  Once in Hana you could stay at the Hotel Hana Maui or at one of the numerous guest houses or b&b’s.  Or you could drive all the way back on the windy road if you wanted, but I highly recommend staying in Hana at least one night!  We stayed at the Guest Houses at Malanai and it was really relaxing and a nice break from the rest of the island.

We’ve never been to Mexico, but we both loved Maui and would like to go back to Hawaii again to see the other islands too.

The biggest thing that swayed us towards Mexico was the affordability of all-inclusive resorts.  I don’t think there are any all-inclusives in Hawaii.

Mexico is much more affordable. Plus it is fun going to another country 🙂

I’ve been to Mexico twice & will tell you to go to Hawaii 100%! Mexico is great but in September it’s going to be unbearably H-O-T plus its just not as nice as Hawaii is (from what I’ve heard about Hawaii – going there on my honeymoon 🙂

I’ve been to Mexico twice, once to Puerto Vallarta and once to Playa Mujeres (just outside of Cancun). I’ve also been to Hawaii twice, once to Maui, and once to Kauai. So, here is my breakdown for you:

-Mexico is very affordable- much more so than Hawaii! You can get so much more for your money in Mexico.

-Mexico offers all-inclusives, which are so nice. We did a 5 star all-inclusive resort in Mexico for our honeymoon and it was fantastic. Hawaii has one all-inclusive resort, and it’s very expensive.

-Both places have nice beaches (depending on where you are), but Hawaii’s beaches are nicer.

-Hawaii, for the most part, is more up-scale then Mexico. There are a ton of tourists, nice restaurants, and gorgeous resorts. Mexico also has gorgeous resorts, but if you go outside the resort, the beauty quickly fades (again, depeding on where you stay).

I guess it depends what you’re looking for. My husband and I wanted to lay on a beach and be pampered, so we went to Mexico and booked the nicest room our resort offered (and it was fabulous!). For the same price, we could have gone to Hawaii, but we would have stayed in a standard room without all the luxury.

Anyway, I hope this helps!

EDIT: I also meant to add that the weather can be hit or miss in Mexico during September, because it’s right around hurricane season. My first trip to Mexico was to Puerto Vallarta in September, and the weather was awesome, but the week before we got there a hurricane had hit.
