Anyone else planning a Honeymoon in Hawaii and concerned about nuclear materials making it to Japan or being consummed by fish that end up near Hawaii? My fiancee is concerned and thinks maybe we should change plans if the nuclear reactor in Japan isn’t under control soon. Any thoughts?

We were also thinking of an Hawaiian honeymoon and have those same concerns. Honestly I don’t think we will go there now :(.

My mom made a joke that we would come back from our honeymoon “glowing” but I’m not terribly concerned. The heavier particles won’t be able to travel as far as Hawaii. I’m not a worrier, I assume there will be increased scrutiny around produce/fish.

I think you’re being silly. Japan is incredibly far away from Hawaii. You will likely be exposed to more radiation on your flight to Hawaii than any radiation that makes it’s way there from Japan.
There could be issues if the hotel you are staying at was affected by the tsunami, I know some hotels have had to close.

No, Hawaii is too far for worry. I know the news articles are saying that contamination is being detected all along the West Coast, etc. – but the fact is that the detectors are so sensitive that they are picking up levels way below what is harmful to people.

I don’t think you need to panic but if you really are that concerned there is nothing wrong with picking another location if that would give you peace of mind.

there is ALOT of sensationalism in the media about how bad the risks actually are with the nuclear fallout of the devastation in Japan. The levels that are being detected in the water JUST OUTSIDE the nuclear plant are on the low side of dangerous – no more harmful than getting about 20-50 Xray in a year. India has just stirred up heaps more controversy by banning the import of japanese fish even though the radioactivity levels detected in fish in japanese water is below the danger threshold. THe mercury in japanese fish will kill you 100 times over before the radioactive particles get you.
Everyone needs to CHILL about this and think critically about the messages coming from media outlets. The japanese and americal government are much better sources of information at this point.
I would definitely proceed as planned with a honeymoon in Hawaii if i were you.
