- Wedding: January 2014
My SO lives in the UK, and I live in the US. We’re planning to get married in about a year, at which point I will get a spousal visa and move over to be with him.
Because of this impending move, I have honestly been nervous about discussing the future with my parents. I’ve been so afriad they would not approve – not because of who my SO is – but because they would be afriad of losing me with the big move.
Last night my SO emailed my parents (email is a bit ick, but we don’t really have other options with the international distance) asking for their blessing and stating his intention to ask me to marry him while I am visiting for these few weeks. He was so nervous.
My mother replied, and oh man, the water works came!
She gave a big congratulations, and that she knows he couldn’t have picked a better woman to be his wife. She admitted it was bittersweet news because of the distance, but she trusts my judgement. She also included some stuff about hoping we would bring God into the center of our lives – this part I wasn’t thrilled with as I’ve been a “closeted” atheist for a couple years now, but nonetheless, it’s very like my mother to say it, and I do not hold it against her. At the end she said “welcome to the family.”
I’m just so happy that I had to share! We were both so nervous, and I’m so glad she accepts him and our relationship. It’s been a rough road at times with the distance, so to see the strings finally coming together is the biggest relief and joy.
Ah! I’m so happy. He’ll be popping the question any day now (I assume Christmas or Christmas Eve), so I’ll for sure be posting again when it happens. 🙂
And if there are any other long distance Bees who had a similar experience, share! Or share if you were nervous about the whole asking as well.
