Actions speak louder than words, and from your engagement story it sounds like your Fiance was more than happy to be engaged to you and to marry you. My now-DH is also the same. He personally used to think that marriage is just a piece of paper, but he knew that it was important to me and my parents that in order to spend the rest of our lives together we need to be married. He went through a lengthy process picking the best ring for me, and he planned the most romantic proposal ever. Even during the wedding planning he was more excited abt it than I was. And now he actually feels sorry for some of our friends who want to get married but whose partners insist that living together is good enough and that marriage is just a piece of paper.

I’m in the same boat, bee. I have no doubt that my Fiance loves me and wants to spend his life with me, but he actually stalled proposing for quite a long time because he was feeling so much pressure from others to do it and wanted it to be his decision– not because it was expected of us. It was hard for me not to take it the wrong way when he said that he was willing to marry me because he knew it would make me happy and show his commitment to our relationship. I agree with him that it’s silly that suddenly our 6+ year long relationship is more legitimate to our family and friends because of a ring and setting a wedding date. If you want to hear an excellent, touching stand up routine on the subject, I’d highly recommend Mike Birbiglia’s “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend”– the ending makes me tear up every time and it’s pretty relevant to our situation. Pretty sure it’s on Netflix– check it out! 🙂
