I’m sorry your fiance is so set against it.  My Fiance was against it from the get go.  The first thing he told me when we talked about marriage (casually that is) after our first date was that he didn’t believe in the big fancy wedding and he hadn’t ever been to a wedding either.

I had kept that in mind and hadn’t anticipate falling in love and of course was thrilled and surprised when Fiance proposed and told me though he doesn’t believe in weddings, he wants to make me happy, and if a wedding is what I want then we’d have a wedding.  We went to a wedding together and he didn’t hate it.

Has he been to a wedding? maybe he needs to see what goes on at one? Perphaps you can explain to your FI and let him know that it would make you happy to have one, even a small small one.

Ditto the marriage is about compromise advice.  There HAS to be a solution that works for both of you (e.g. going to the courthouse with close family/friends) and going out to dinner to celebrate.
