We went ring shopping today and he surprised me with a ring!!
hehe, ok I couldn’t resist. Technically, it was the salesperson that gave us the rings, but he did get the blue one above he gave to me so I could take a picture.
So we went to the ring store recommended by a friends mother today. Apparently we fit the profile and were immediately asked if we were shopping for engagement rings and sent upstairs (I wonder how embarrassing it is if you are not and are asked that?). After browsing a bit, a woman came over to help us. She was pretty great on suggesting some different things that fit what I am looking for more, such as three prongs on the sidestones to make them “blend” into the ring band more. Here’s an example, but the one I looked at didn’t have the fancy side setting (whch I do love, so might see if they can do something similar). https://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/three-stone/3-stone-butterflies-diamond-engagement-ring-1288.htmHe was a bit surprised to find out timeline would be over 3 weeks to have it made up, I was pleased it wasn’t 4-6 after hearing from some ladies here about their wait.
I was very unpleasantly surprised by the estimated price, but he wasn’t, and told me that he wanted me to get what I loved, didn’t want me to want to change it later, I’d be wearing it for (presumably) the rest of my life, and he wanted me to have something nice. He reminded me we are in our thirties and can afford it. So, we’ll figure it out when we pick an actual center diamond, but considering this is the same guy who tells me diamonds are pencils, why do I want to wear a pencil on my finger, this was very very positive. 🙂
Afterwards, we had lunch together and talked about all sorts of things. I asked him about when he was thinking we’d get married, and he responded “I thought you wanted spring of next year.” Yay, he listened, though we might need to do fall. We also talked venues, locations, even possible flower girls from daughters of his friends.
After lunch, we picked up something quickly at the mall (ok, I confess, I love the Victoria’s Secret is constantly send me gift cards for freebies in the mail) and swung by two mall jewelers, but they had next to no selection so we left and went for another nearby free standing place.
There, the woman wanted to educate us on diamonds first. I learned that I’m apparently fairly color sensitive and can very easily see the color in diamonds. (So much for thinking that was a good area to compromise on…) Also got to peer at quite a few diamond through the jewelers loupe – very fun! They looked like bubbles or dark spots. I can find the inclusions in an SI easily, but they don’t bother me as much as color does, so we’ll see what we end up with. I have terrible diamond ettiquette; she’d shine the diamond and then I’d pick it right up with my fingers to stick it in the tweezers because I couldn’t pick it up with the tweezers themselves.
So we came home, I looked at a bunch more websites and am pretty happy with my choice-though I’ll look some more this week, of course! And I think once I’m happy with my choice, he’s happy to go right out for us to pick out the diamond and get it made up. (He gave some yays/nays and likes/dislikes, but really wants me to pick it out.) Eeeek! Maybe I can even persuade him to go back next Saturday!
Re timing of proposal…we’re going away this Memorial Day weekend for our anniversary, but it won’t be made in time for that. After that…maybe at my 10 year college reunion in June? I dunno… He’s worried about having a good proposal – commented on that yesterday. He has a friend that rolled over in bed after sex and said “hey wanna get married?” and another that said “I’ve got something in my pocket for you…” (insinuating, yeah…). So I told him a while back he had to do something more, but it doesn’t need to be fancy. I just have to be able to tell my grandmother how he asked me, without being embarrassed…
