Warning long proposal story 🙂
I am a long time lurker (blushes) but I decided to make an account today because….I’m engaged!!!
My boyfriend of seven years and I have talked seriously about getting married for about a year. I think it was around December when he told me that he was planning to propose in the year 2013. Well our anniversary was May 11th. I’d assumed he was going to propose on our anniversary so months before I bought a special dress and made plans to look as breathtaking as possible. Imagine my disappointment when a few weeks ago I hinted to him that I thought something special was going to go down on our anniversary and completely burst my bubble. He told me that he definitely was not going to propose on our anniversary and that he thought it was cheesy. He did not want me to expect it so it was not going to happen on any special event or holiday. I was bummed but I thought he reasoning was sweet. He was how disappointed I was and started to tease me by saying he was going to make me wait until December 31st 2013.
Fast forward to May 10th this past Friday. I was off that day and he’d invited me to a lunch his work was having for staff and their significant others. He told me to dress cute as he had a rep to protect (he’s a jokster sometimes). So I go to meet him at his work and he asks to drive to the restaurant. I think it was weird because he hates to drive but I figured it made sense as he knew where the restaurant was. As we start driving, I ask questions about where we are going to eat as I had not eaten breakfast and am starving. He tells me that he lied and that we were going to a work lunch. He said that he felt bad that we couldn’t do anniversary gifts this year because money was tight and he is never creative enough to plan surprises for me so he wanted to do something nice for our 7 year anniversary. I’m shocked because he never really does things like this.
So me being the Greedy McGee that I am I ask if we were going out to eat and he says yes. So we keep driving. Eventually he pulls off onto the exit for the National Arboretum (sp?) and I am delightfully surprised as I’d never been there before. I was skeptical that there was a place to eat there but he assured me there was. I start to slightly suspect something because as we drive through the park I don’t see any signs for a restaurant. So we park and start walking. Eventually we come to a tree where he’d set out a blanket, picnic basket, tulips and a printed itinerary of our anniversary activites. We were supposed to go to the zoo and out to eat the next day. It was so nice and sweet and I really thought the picnic was the surprise.
As we sit down to eat he tells me to open the basket. So I do…and the ring box was in there! I was so surprised, happy, excited, and shocked all at once. I open the box and see the ring and start crying as he gets down on one knee. Don’t ask me what he said as I was in such shock I can’t remember. He also got choked up cuz I started crying.
After a few moments, two of his coworkers pull up in a SUV. They’d come earlier and set up the picnic for him so it would be ready when we got there. They were also hiding and taking pics of the whole thing from behind a tree!
I am on cloud 9. We have been together for a long time but it just feels so great to be engaged finally. He’s been talking constantly about how he’s been saving for the ring so I though that he hadn’t bought yet. Unbeknownst to me he’s bought the ring and asked my dad and stepdad for their blessing a week ago. I thought that I wouldn’t care if I knew when he was going to ask but I am so glad he tricked me. Surprise proposals are the best 🙂
