i totally understand the frustration in this. my boyfriend had been saving and we had an emergency issue at the house and he basically used the ring money + extra to take care of it.  just like your boyfriend, it put him in a no win situation. and since its more important to have a working vehicle,or for our case, water in the house, there’s really no way around it. i also offered looking at rings again to see if we could find something less expensive, and he didn’t want to do that.

my boyfriend looked into financing but even with his great credit, the interest rates after the 0% offers were ridiculous. he ended up borrowing from his 401k, which wasn’t ideal but it’s what he was more comfortable with doing.

what matters (and what i’ve had to repeat to myself, too) is that he wants to marry you. with or without the ring, you’re still already on the road to “spending your life together”. even though its frustrating, hang tight, it’ll happen!

I agree that financing could be a good idea too.

Your SO is so lucky to have a girlfriend like you, who cares about the feelings regardless of the ring. My ering wasn’t so expensive, but all the same it was important for me to get one. So I admire you.

I know when Fiance and I first started looking at rings we went to pawn shops. I’m not a superstitious person so having someone else’s old ring doesn’t bother me. The pawn shops by us only required 10% down and you could make monthly payments towards any jewelry there. So it was layaway. My mother ended up giving Fiance the family ring before we found one I was in love with. Either way I ended up with someone else’s old ring one only 1 out of the 3 marriages the ring has been through didn’t end in divorce.
