- Wedding: August 2016
After the festivities on the 4th, we ended up back at the camp and had a long talk on the porch before going to bed. Granted, we were both a little tipsy/drunk. But here’s what went down:
Me: “So, can I ask a serious question – I know I’m not supposed to know about this stuff, but since you already know that I peeked, I know you are planning to propose before September, and I just wanted to know if you were still planning on that.”
He looked at me seriously and kindly and said without hesitation: “Honestly, it’s just financing that’s the issue. I am going to marry you. If I could afford it, you would have a ring on your finger right now.”
I said: “I know – I don’t mean to pressure you at all. I totally understand this. I just wanted to know if you thought it was still happening, because I don’t want to know how or when or where it’s going to happen, but I do think it’s fair that I know you are planning it and the general timeframe.”
He said: “It’s my goal. But you may have to wait a little longer now because you peeked!” (He smiled/laughed).
Me: “I hope you don’t think I want some crazy expensive ring, either. You know. I don’t care about that at all.”
He said: “Well that’s good because you’re not going to get that! I mean, I could give you an aluminum foil ring, or a promise ring, you know. But I just didn’t want to do that because I want to do it right. I am going to marry you. Here, give me your finger.”
I gave him my finger, then he took it and said “here is your aluminum promise ring” and put an imaginary ring on my finger. I laughed and looked down, but he said “No, give me your finger. I’m not wavering”. He was actually really serious.
He put my finger down then said “I’ve already told all my friends. I called them all and told them, “I found the one.” They’re all just waiting.”
Anyway, I hestitated about sharing this here, but I thought it was very sweet.
