Sorry this is SUPER LONG but I am sort of venting a bit.
On February 2nd, my SO, James, ordered my engagment ring. Everything was set up for it to be delievered before Valentine’s Day (on the website there was a guarenteed “before Valentine’s Day delivery so I knew it would be here for sure – I picked the ring out). Unfortuantely, James was being flown out for a job interview over Valentine’s weekend so he told me not to be expecting anything and that the ring hadn’t even come in the mail yet. I was disappointed initially, but a part of me was still hopeful. He made plans to fly back in the evening on the 14th so that we would be able to have dinner together. I was convinced that by telling me the ring hadn’t come in yet – we’ve been having blizzards – that this was all some kind of trick and that he was going to ask me anyway.
On Valentine’s Day around 5pm, I get a phone call. His flight was delayed. An hour later, his flight is cancelled. He is stuck in the airport until his rescheduled flight early the next morning. I was upset to spend Valentine’s Day alone, but there wasn’t anything to be done. It was a state of emergency and I was stuck inside anyway.
The next morning, I pick him up from the airport. Neither of us slept much the night before so we were exhausted. After a nap, he asks me to hand him his phone. I see a text from our friend Sean (and I had put two and two together earlier that week so I knew that James had the ring shipped to Sean’s house). The text reads: I don’t know where it is. I don’t have it. Or something like that. I give James the phone and after a minute or two, I decided to tell him that I read the text and I want to know what’s going on. THE RING IS MISSING.
We checked the tracking number and it had been delievered SEVEN DAYS earlier and was nowhere to be found. After talking with Sean, we determinded that because James shipped the package to Sean’s townhouse complex, it was in the townhouse office. It is a graduate student residence so because James was not listed as a resident (despite the address) it wouldn’t have made it to Sean. James reassured me that it was in the office and that it would be found. He didn’t express a real sense of urgency which was upsetting to me as MY ENGAGMENT RING IS MISSING. Hello!? I decided to take matters into my own hands and track it down rather than leaving it to him and Sean as I am not the most patient person.
I called the townhouse office and told the woman a package was missing. She had such a sweet voice and as soon as I told her what was in the package her voice dropped and she just said, “WHAT” (Finally, an appropriate reaction). Bless her soul, she looked every where for it. It was not at the office. She told me to call the post office because packages sent to non-residents would be shipped return to sender. I called the website after that and it had not been shipped back to them.
The next morning, I go to the post office after I drop James off for class/work. Because ND has it’s own zip code, they have their own post office. I am able to convince the security guards to let me through the campus gates despite not being a student there, thank goodness. I get to the post office and explain the situation. The woman looks everywhere and cannot find it. I give her the tracking number and, of course, THE SYSTEM IS DOWN. At this point, no one knows where it is. The post office woman tells me to call the ND mail center and see if they have it.
I call the ND mail center and explain to another person what’s going on. She puts me on hold for a moment and I literally burst into tears when she told me SHE HAS THE PACKAGE. It’s 12 degrees here today but I didn’t even care as I RAN across campus without gloves or a scarf or anything to the mail center. By the time I got there and she put the package in my FROZEN hands, I was sobbing. AFTER SEVEN DAYS OF BEING MISSING, the ring has been found!!!! I was so lucky, too, because she said that it was going to be returned to the sender TODAY. If I had left this up to James he wouldn’t have made it because his schedule is escentially 9-5 and the office closes at 4.
SO I FOUND MY RING. It has taken every fiber of my being not to open up the package. But it’s HERE and that’s all that matters.
I told James that he would need to march into our living room on horseback with the ring in one hand and a puppy in the other to make it up to me. I am expecting an AMAZING proposal after all that STRESS!!!!
