So it finally happened! He popped the question on our trip to Maui (just as I had suspected)! When he put the ring on my finger I didn’t think it was going to fit, but once we got it on all the way it fit perfectly.
Now that i’ve had the ring for almost a week, i’ve been starting to have some concerns. I work with food, so my job does not allow me to wear jewelry and every day before work I have to take it off. However, it’s really difficult for me to take off. I’ve tried twisting it, squeezing my finger to slide it off, and have even used hand sanitizer and windex to make it slippery (it kind of helps). I am always able to get it off, but it hurts and sometimes my finger gets swollen as a result.
I really don’t want to get it resized because I want to keep it the way it was when my fiance proposed, but I don’t know if I can do this every time I need to take it off. However, I’m concerned that if I do get it resized, it’ll change the look of my ring or it might be too loose and spin around too much or even fall off!
Has anyone else had this problem? Did you just put up with it or did you resize it? I’m trying to get out of the food department soon, so I won’t have the problem of having to take it off every day but I don’t know if I can get used to fighting my finger every time I want to take it off. Any tips for taking off my ring is welcomed as well! Thank you in advance.

I would definitely get it sized up! It’ll still be the same ring, just a little bigger. It shouldn’t be that hard to get off or cause you any pain…
congrats btw on your engagment!!

You gotta size up! Talk to your jeweler about it.

From the sounds of it, I would say that your ring is too small. I used to work in a jewellery store (in Australia, so not sure how things work in the US) and we resized rings all the time – they always looked the same when they were finished, the band was just slightly bigger or slightly smaller. It’s even possible to go up or down by half a size, which it sounds like is all you need.

I have issues with my hands that cause swelling, and I’ve had my ring sized up a bit. My band is plain, so it didn’t affect the look. Do you have pave stones or anything in the band? That would be my only concern, but it’s still doable. Resizing your ring is generally a very quick and easy thing to get done.
If my ring is snug and I’m having problems getting it off, I run it under cold water (anything cold will help reduce the swelling) and use hand soap to slip it off.

If it is that tight it needs to be resized – what if one day its hot and your fingers swell up and you can’t get it off and need to get it cut off (Learn from my mistake)
Congratulations on your engagement!

Here’s a side view of the ring in the store. That one diamond is the only one I’d be concerned about, but I’m definitely gonna ask to see if it’ll be an issue. Thank you for bringing that to my attention!

jwaka24: Don’t worry it will be fine 🙂 I sized my ring up from 4.25 to a size 5 and its a little loose now but I like it like that. The ring looks the exact same. Remember when you add a wedding band it will feel a little tighter. Just take it back to the store he bought it from, they will likely do it for free too. They are professionals! 🙂

jwaka24: What you’re describing is repeated physical trauma to your finger.
You’re going to ruin your knuckle if you don’t get it sized up. Get to the jeweler!

Getting it resized does not change how it was when he proposed. Being comfortable for the rest of your life is so much more important. And when you add a wedding band, the ring will feel even tighter. Resize it. A good jeweler will know how to not hurt the side diamond.

Definitely size it up – remember, it’s more your original ring when it’s been enlarged slightly than it will be when they have to cut it off! (and they really will someday if you don’t deal with it now).

Definitely size it up! If you didn’t have to take it off all the time, it might be less of an issue, but it’s literally hurting you every day. A good jeweler will be able to add the space you need without changing the look of the ring, and they will make sure it is sized correctly (not too loose either!) Just make sure you go to a reputable, well reviewed jeweler where they do the work onsite.
I had to get my engagement ring sized up because it was a 4 and I needed a 7.5! It was my Grandma’s and it means so much to me, but it is absolutely the same ring as it was before, just with a tiny bit more metal <3
Edit to add: Just saw what a PP said about your ring getting tighter once you add a wedding band- it is absolutely true! The wider a ring is the more it compresses your finger. My Engagement Ring without the wedding bands is significantly looser, even though they are all exactly the same size.

Nothing wrong with having it resized!
