I decided to complete my first half marathon (what was I thinking?) on my birthday, Sunday, April 27, 2014. All morning as we traveled to downtown DC, my boyfriend (now FI!!!!) gave me encouragements. He kept mentioning romantic moments in our relationship, like our first date, and the first time we met. I was smiling and excited, though a bit distracted as I was mentally preparing to conquer 13.1 miles. He was super sweet, and he stayed with me all the way through the start line. Then he blew me a kiss, and I was on my way! Little did I know, he had the ring in his pocket the whole time.
He thought about popping the question at the finish line, but with 15,000 women running the race, he figured it was a little too public and crowded for our tastes. Plus, as I finally came through the finish line, drenched in sweat and slightly limping, all I wanted to do was get my finisher’s necklace and find some water! Despite all of that, he told me that in that moment, I was the most beautiful woman to ever finish a half marathon.
After all the festivities, we went home to relax. He propped my feet up and brought me some post-race recovery snacks. And after watching our favorite TV show, he paused the TV and asked me to get him a glass of water. When I returned to the couch, there was a ring box on the coffee table! He said he knew we were already planning to get married, but he wanted to make everything official. Then, while slowly putting the ring on my finger, he asked me THE question “Will you marry me?”
I couldn’t control myself; I squealed a “YES” and dove to crush him in a hug, forgetting my sore muscles.
Then we got on Facebook and changed our relationship status at the exact same time .
