Any time you take your ring in to be cleaned/repaired/whatever make sure you get something in writing that specifically lists the ring’s details.  You know, the exact carat cut color clarity and if the diamond has an ID #.  I know that GIA will inscribe the diamond on its girdle with its number.  Plus if your ring is insured (which everyone should do!) this will protect you against any kind of theft or diamond swapping, which is somewhat common with shady jewelers.

Firemanslady, you can order a jeweler’s loupe for pretty cheap and use that to look at your diamond.

That way you know what inclusions(if any) to look for, and any other identifying marks should be easier to see.

A reputable place won’t steal your diamond.  The places you have to worry about are the unknown ones.  Jared is a large retail chain store.  They won’t risk their reputation and jail time for one diamond.  I didn’t mean to scare you.  I just thought everyone should know that it does happen at some places and everyone should be careful with their diamonds.  Good luck with your repair!

i’m really glad that i am getting a gemstone i’m hoping it’s harder to do a switcheroo… and i agree with a badge, big chain stores won’t risk their reputations and most smaller stores with great reputations won’t either. i would definitely go on referrals to both.
