perfectsummer :  I did it all myself! It was TONS of work – especially the legal side – had to send so many documents via courier, early morning phone calls cause of the time difference etc – but so worth it!

I found some destination elopement packages online but they were all sooo expensive (like 5k just to coordinate, doesn’t include flights or anything) I figured I could do it on my own.

I’m so sorry both you and your fiance went through losing both your parents at such a young age. I can imagine that planning any kind of wedding without them would bring up a lot of grief, and the fact that the rest of your family is dysfunctional probably doesn’t help. From what you wrote here, I think what you’re feeling might be less about eloping and more about the fact that you feel like you’ve been forced into it because of your family situation. That is an awful feeling, I’m sorry you’re having to deal with it 🙁 .

I’m eloping with just my fiance, and I love the fact that it will just be us, but that’s not for everyone, and it was a choice I made freely. There are definitely things you can do to make the day feel special, though. I love the idea of doing everything up right—dress, hair, makeup, etc.—basically doing everything like you would at a big formal wedding but having it be just for each other 🙂 . I can totally understand not wanting your family there if you aren’t close to them. Do you have a close group of friends you can invite? It’s your day, you should be surrounded by the people who love you the most, regardless of whether they’re related to you.

Coming from a disfunctional family, I have no regrets on my planned elopement!  We traveled to our favorite place, had a photographer and officiant, flowers, beautiful dress.  It was magical and stress free.

So when my husband and I remarried (each other, long story), we just had our friend who officiated, her husband, my best friend (who threatened me if I left her out, lol) and our children.  I wore a lovely dress, did my hair and makeup, had flowers.  It was intimate and perfect.
