Has anyone else experienced this? My friends and I went out to dinner last night and we all had a bit too much wine (this is a very rare occurence and I am not a habitual drinker, so too much wine for me is actually a very small amount). Several hours after dinner, just before I went to bed, I started getting my usual mild post-wine headache. Went to bed, slept for several hours, and then woke up feeling incredibly jittery and weird and my heart was fluttering like crazy. I got up, got some water, went back to bed, sort of went back to sleep, but several more times through the night I awoke with heart palpitations, which would go away when I woke up and took deep breaths.
So weird and unnerving. I am definitely inclined to blame the (sulfite-containing) wine, as my SO gets horrible headaches from non-organic wine (the kind that contains added sulfites) and my parents have each gotten heart racing issues from consuming alcohol of some kind during times in their lives when they’ve been super stressed. I’m rather stressed right now since I’m in grad school and a class I’m in is about to go on a field study trip, camping in another country, which is nerve-racking to me (I’m also looking forward to it, but I am worried about getting sick from the food there or something. . . worrywart w/ a sensitive digestive system!).
ANYWAY has anyone else gotten such weirdness from drinking some kind of alcohol?

@Creiddylad: I get this (nervous, heart pounding, anxiety feeling) the next morning if I overdo it on any type of alcohol

@emmalyn: I’m glad to hear that I’m not alone in this, but really sorry to hear you get these unpleasant issues from alcohol too. I’ve never experienced such a thing before– so very weird.

I get horrible headaches from red wine! And I have definitely got jittery the next day from drinking it.
Both of my parents are allergic to something in red wine. They both get heart palpitations, my dad finds it hard to breathe when drinking it and my mom gets super anxious from it.
ETA: I have no issues with white wine (unless I drink too much lol), my mom can drink white wine just fine, but my dad can’t drink any wine at all.

@emmalyn: Same here. If I drink any liquor or beer in excess, I get palpitations and heavy pounding in my chest. I’ve gone to a doctor for it before and he told me there isn’t really anything to be concerned about unless I feel faint or pass out.

I’ve seen it both ways. Some people get heart palpitations from drinking too much alcohol, but sometimes the alchohol just exposes a heart problem which might already be there. I realize that is sort of ambiguous, sorry!
It would probably be worth it to mention this to your doctor. If this happens again soon, or if it is accompanied by chest pain, dizziness, or other symptoms that just feel off. I would probably go to the ER.
Also, in the future, it seems like it might be a good idea to avoid alcohol as much as possible. The heachaches and palpitations you get are often a sign that you do not metabolize alcohol quickly or effectively, which you seem to know already!

@Creiddylad: Sulfites don’t cause headaches and red wine actually contains fewer sulfites than white wine and sweet, dessert-type wines. Less than 1% of the population is sensitive to sulfites and those who are experience asthma-like symptoms, not headaches.
I’d bet your heart palpitations were simply from drinking too much in combination with your high stress levels (I’m assuming they went away by the next day when your body would have been able to metabolize the alcohol?). If you’re really concerned though, I’d ask your doctor.

I get a horrible headache from even a few sips of red wine. Any amount of alcohol makes me not sleep well. I’d guess that you felt your heart race because you were dehydrated. That happens to me when I don’t get enough water. Dehydration can also cause headaches.

I get this too! And I already have a heart murmur so it just intensifies, I always feel like I’m going to die….

I get this way sometimes after drinking too much of anything – wine not so much but it’s been ages since i’ve drank too much. Definitely get this when drinking liquor and always if i’ve had red bull and vodka (which I haven’t had in years!)
Do you have a heart murmur or any other condition? I have a heart murmur and a BAV so I always just assumed that was why.

It could be an allergic reaction. There are histamines in Red wine that effect your body. You could be just f ine with a nice white wine.

Now that I think about it, this also happens when I take medications that raise blood pressue. Too much alcohol raises blood pressure, so maybe that has something to do with it.
