I’m looking into getting the heart shaped wedding rice for our toss :
All of the information I’ve found says that it’s safe for birds.. but.. is it REALLY safe? Anyone know for sure? Used it? Is it not actually “rice”? Would love to know more about it if you did.

I don’t think rice is safe for birds but this looks like flattened rice, like they have in India. Put some in water first and see if it expands a lot. Not a good idea to feed birds stuff that expands too much, or so I hear.

Cordellia: a_day_at_the_fair: mgbser: Thanks ladies, I have already purchased the heart shaped rice.
I was looking for an alternative because while I’m not sure if the whole rice/bird thing is true [never had to deal with it before so haven’t invested alot of time researching], many of my family believe the old tale. Hard to get people off of things that they “believe” in.

The bird thing is a myth, however most venues don’t allow rice

Why not just throw bird seed? What could be luckier than feeds little song birds?

I think that wet rice can be slippery – maybe that’s why most places don’t allow it. I’ve never seen amything other than birdseed, in recent decades.

my venue recommended biodegradable confetti if we were going to toss anything, but it sounds like you’ve already made a purchase so stick with that!

Yes it is safe. We used it at a wedding that I had planned. The venue was a wild life museum and they would only allow this because it was safe for all their animals.
