I always experience heavy bleeding and extreme cramping during my period, but this month is like nothing I’ve ever had. Yesterday was day 1 of my period and the cramping was so extreme I stayed in bed most of the day (this is not uncommon for me, but yesterday was much worse than ever before). This morning when I woke up I was still cramping very badly and felt weak and light-headed. (TMI–) I am soaking through super-plus tampons in about an hour (this IS uncommon for me). The heaviness of the bleeding has not let up at all in 2 days. Oh, and I’m not on any kind of BC pills.
I also have a kind of bad sinus infection right now, so the weak feeling could also be attributed to that.
I’ve been experiencing nausea so I haven’t felt like eating much. What should I do to keep my strength up? I don’t know if I should call a doctor or just try to wait it out, because like I said, I always have intense periods.

@Miss Sorbet: I’m so sorry you’re going through this! That was how my periods were every month prior to being on bc. Are you on any form of bc? It helped me tremendously. Before I was on it to help soothe my cramps (legs and stomach) I would either take a bath or get those heating pads, I think the one brand is thermocare, that last a few hours and just lay one on me. After so many years of going through that my body was pretty much immune to mido, advil and other otc pain pills. Have you taken and otc pain pills?
O also, this is tmi too but I used to go through atleast 1 tampon and a pad an hour, it was horrible!

I would give your Dr. a call, that rate of bleeding seems heavy to me (although I find it hard to judge when it comes to tampons, versus pads, myself.). They should at least be able to tell you over the phone if you need to come in or go to emergency care. 🙁 Hope you feel better!

For the light headedness, make sure you’re getting enough iron and vitamin B12. It’s common to become anemic when you have heavy bleeding and a deficiency of either or both can make you anemic.
I’m also a fan of the pill to reduce heavy bleeding.
