So, I’m not engaged yet, but hopefully soon. 🙂
Here’s my question: I already have a ring I would love to use as my wedding band. It was my grandmother’s from the 1930’s (1.5 mm, platinum, 5 small round diamonds) and I got it from my mom in high school.
BUT: Is it weird to use something I had before I met my SO as a wedding band?? Isn’t the significance of the wedding band that it symbolizes the new marriage and that it is a reminder of love from my SO? Or am I making too big of a deal out of this and I should just use it if I like it? (Or … should I just wear this ring on my RH or something and choose a wedding band with my SO?).
FYI I don’t wear it now as it needs to be sized down to a 5 either way …
Thank you in advance for your thoughts!!

Do you want to keep it exactly as is? Could he change it in any way so that it’s still your grandmothers ring but also has his touch to it? If he is fine using it then I say go for it, you don’t have to follow any rules.

I say wear it. It will still be there as a symbol of you and your SO. You love it, it has meaning to you. Wear it!

That is so sweet! I would deffinately wear it as a wedding band, you can just add the engagement ring to it and that can be your personal wedding touch, but it really is a nice idea.

Thanks for your posts! SO is fine with whatever I want (this is all still speculative given as how we’re not yet engaged, ha). I tend to agree that I *will* be adding an e-ring from SO so that counts, right? 🙂

definitely wear it! i love heirloom bands.
but i would totally give it to your boyfriend so when the time comes he makes sure to pick an engagement ring that will compliment the band!
another option would be to stack the heirloom ring with another wedding band that would be just for you and your fiance!

I would love to see a pic.
I have an antique 5stone ring too – platinum 3mm. I love it.
I think rings have the meaning you give them.

If you had been wearing it, it might be a little weird, but since your not, it’s cute. Besides he can always get you an anniversary ring down the line.
My mother gave us my wedding band and we had intended to use the stones for my e-ring, considering we had been shopping for weeks and hadn’t found what I wanted, we planned to have it made custom. Well, I had a feeling about the last store we went to, and wouldn’t you know that exactly what I was looking for was in the case (actually it was bigger.) The sales lady suggested that I use the band, well as my band, and they looked great together. Apparently mom has one more (other than the one she wears) and plans to give it to my sister when she gets married.
Darling Husband put it on my finger during our ceremony, so I look at that as him giving it to me. It just has a cute story behind it.

@msgraphics: I love that! 🙂
@lilsweetie: I would post a photo if I knew how!! I think I must be the last person on the planet without a smartphone that will email pics to my computer … (which I gather is the way most people post pics?).
@september29: I thought of that too. 🙂 I am currently eyeing a 2 mm pink gold band from Cartier. Le sigh.
