“You are not concerned about my health. Because if you were concerned about my health, you would also be concerned about mymental health, which has spent the past 28 years being slowly eroded by statements like the above.”

So true!  I couldn’t agree more.  I remember a kid that would constantly call me a fat ass (I was bigger than most girls, but wasn’t fat) almost every single day.  My mother also ruined my self esteem.  It’s a shame, but it has really killed me in that mental health sense.

I love Lindy, and the way she writes!  I read that in The Stranger, and was like “Whoa. That makes sense.”  I think all girls should read it, before they learn to hate themselves right off the bat.  I grew up thinking I was fat, and certain people (my father) helped make it a permanent thought.  Now I look back and wonder why!  If only I had learned earlier that being happy is more important than being thin, I feel like I wouldn’t have wasted so much time worrying about it, and would probably be a healthier person today because of it.

So in conclusion, well said, Lindy, well said.

Wow, good read. That really is an amazing article. I think more than a few ladies here on the bee need to read this πŸ™‚

Love it!  And I found the comments on the links she provided very enlightening… the links pissed me off for the most part, but the discussions afterwards have some great points.

Lindy West is awesome and fucking hilarious. I love her movie reviews so much. Did you know she lives in LA now? I keep hoping I’ll randomly meet her and then we’ll be best friends, of course.

You know what’s shameful? A complete lack of empathy.

YES.

@Beluga: And once you are best friends, you can introduce her to the hive and we can all drink and be merry? Yes?
