Next year, I am signing in a wedding and traveling and having to stay in a hotel for a few days. (Which is going to cost about $300.) Am I expected to buy a gift?!? I feel that I do not have to because I am having to spend the money to travel as well as lending my services.

I would think that your services are your gift (unless they are paying you like a vendor)… BUT- it would be nice of you to bring at least a card with a nice, heartfelt note inside. Gifts should never be expected. If you feel comfortable doing so, and are able after travel expenses, you can get a gift card to go with your wedding card.

When I got married, I was very surprised that some of the people who traveled so far for our wedding gave gifts. I did not expect them, however, I didn’t really expect them from anyone.
As a GUEST, I would still give a gift. I might spend a bit less than I would for a local wedding, but I would give for sure.
