Hi everyone, I just got engaged a month ago and we’re planning a wedding for 2015. You’ve all already helped me so much- thank you. We’re trying to pin down a venue and book by the end of the month. I think we have it narrowed down to 2. They would equal very different weddings. My FH and I are full time grad students in our late 20s.
Choice 1- Elegant historical house, very close to where FH and I live. Outdoor garden ceremony, indoor reception. The house and all the rooms are very gorgeous, dark hardwood, solemn and very grown-up. We would get “normal” catering and drinks, DJ and dance floor. The house is a bit cramped for 100 people, and the dance floor is in a different room from the reception, etc there are things about the layout that bother me but aren’t dealbreakers. There is good seating and extra couches/chairs everywhere (conversation corners). Convenient to shops, restaurants, attractions, hotels, etc just really convenient for our guests and for us. We have a hold on a March 2015 date which is our original plan.
Choice 2- Farm/ranch house venue 1-hour drive away, in ~ the middle of nowhere. It is an amazing place. Birds chirping, baby farm animals, avocado trees, so so many flowers and natural beauty, comes with paper lanterns, the whole 9 yards. However for catering and reception you have to basically rent everything piece by piece. VERY popular venue, but since it’s outdoor everything (guests can’t go indoors at all), it only opens for the high season and we’d have to book for June 2015. If it rains (unlikely in Southern CA but still possible) we basically have to rent tents and/or heat lamps in the last week (tack on $3000). It would be a fun BBQ backyard party type of wedding, with lawn games and bluegrass music.
We are having 80-100 guests, 80% are flying from out of town. 50-60% are age 55+. Basically, I have concerns about the comfort and convenience of my guests. I think Choice 1 would be much more convenient for everyone, and the older guests would be able to remain seated without getting cold or being tired of a wooden chair or going to a farm outhouse bathroom, which is what Choice 2 affords. Summer is busier for everyone, so I don’t want to impose on people. Not everyone likes BBQ with paper plates and plastic utensils, especially the older crowd. I just want everyone to be comfortable and happy. I do like the idea of the super fun BBQ personalized backyard shindig, but I think I like the idea of comfortable guests more.
Any ideas or advice? I’m really just going back and forth constantly! Sorry for the long post…
