I usually like blue nile, but I voted for the other, I feel like the prongs are more precise.

You can easily find this setting online. I probably wouldn’t order from BN, but maybe Whiteflash or JA.

You can find canadian diamonds on JA.

Birks is like tiffanys. You are paying for the brand. The diamond and setting are not actually any better than other places.

I looked, and actually I can’t really find another (in price) setting that I like more than the birks.

SO, next advice – call birks and ask if they’ll set an heirloom diamond. Then you can buy the diamond online (saving $, getting larger) and still get the setting you like. You’ll need to know how much the setting is at birks and how much the setting fee is. (just do NOT tell them you bought it online. Jwellery stores are terrible about shitting on online diamonds).

Alternatively, you could have a jeweller custom make this design. it’s pretty simple, it just has to be executed well. Not sure where you’re located in Canada, but I’m sure you could find someone good.

I like the design of the Birks design better than the Blue Nile one, but I would not actually buy a ring from Birks. Like someone else, overpriced – you are paying a lot for the brand. I would get a stone online from somene like Brian Gavin/James Allen/Whiteflash (go to Pricescope – the Rocky Talky forum -with your budget and have them help). James Allen does have Canadian diamonds, if that is important to you πŸ™‚

I don’t recommend Blue Nile as they are a drop shipper.

Then have someone like David Klass, or even Brian Gavin or Whiteflash if you are more comfortable doing one stop shopping, custom make you the setting in whatever metal you want.  I am Canadian too, have dealt a lot with U.S. vendors, including Brian Gavin, and have been very happy!

Most of the online vendors also have trade-in policies, if that is important to you. You don’t “gain” 1% a year, but you can usually trade in the stone if you buy something worth a certain amount more (most are 2x, but some are lower). Some also have buyback policies (i.e. 60%) which is actually more than you can usually get if you try and sale yourself second hand.

I don’t know the particulars of the Birks warranty, but store warranties are generally useless to be honest. Get your ring, and insure it through Jeweler’s Mutual. Not only do they cover cost of preventative maintenance, but they cover you in case of loss, mysterious disappearance, damage, etc, so more than just theft and so on.

I would go to a local jeweler. Are you in Toronto by any chance? I know an amazing one.

My ring is from Blue Nile so I’m a bit Partial. I did have an issue with them at first but they ended up extending my return period and actually ended up being amazing. You’ll usually get the best price from getting your diamond online. I guess it comes down to do you want a bigger diamond or the prongs from the other seller?
