Could anyone tell me the approximate cost of having a stone removed from a ring and put in a new setting? For reference it is an antique opal ring from my grandmother – much too large and gold right now- and I’m looking to set it in possibly white gold, nothing too fancy. I know very little about fine jewelry and obviously there are variables, just wondering what im looking at here 🙂 thanks!!

I think it probably depends on the level of difficulty, but my jeweller usually charges around $30

if you buy a setting from them, they will usually set it for free!

If you have to buy a new setting although, it depends on the complexity of the setting. Could be as low as a couple hundred upward.

Usually if you buy the setting from a jewelry store, they will do the setting and unmounting for free. But if say you buy your setting online then take it to a local jeweler, it will cost you anywhere from $25-$300. When I had my diamond set in a setting I had bought online I called around to local jewelry stores to get price quotes, and those were the costs I got. It depends on if you chose a small mom and pop type jewelry store or a high end store. Just make sure you pick someone you can trust and that is reputable in your community because opals are very delicate.

Considering this ring is fifty years old and my grandmother has long passed, I really have no way of knowing where it is from. But thank you ladies now I have something to go on. I do worry about it getting cracked also 🙁
