I’m new to selling things so I’m really not sure what to make of this. As much as I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, my gut feeling is telling me i’m being dupped.
I got an email asking to buy my dress. I included one picture in my classified ad, so I was expecting her to request for more photos (who buys a wedding dress without asking any questions??). I was going to offer to send them, but thought I’d wait. I told her it was available and then I received a second email asking me for my paypal email so that she can pay me. I did get payment, but she ended up paying $400 rather than the listed price of $300. After receiving an email saying she sent it, I told her the error and I needed to confirm the shipping address as it has someone else’s name instead. I got another email suggesting I send it out immediately…but no mention of the error. In the meantime, payment is pending me sending the dress. I really want to confirm with paypal that the transaction is legit before sending out the dress. Is anyone familiar with paypal and is there a way to confirm this? Thank you for your help!!!

I think it’s a scam, I’d contact paypal.

If people have a verified account (ie it is linked to a real, verified checking account with verified backup credit card) it will say that on the Paypal transaction next to their Paypal ID.
If they overpaid and aren’t responding, that’s fishy. I would not send it until you can reach the buyer. At least they haven’t asked you to send them the cash difference or something else equally fishy.

I wouldn’t send it! I use PayPal often and the payment ALWAYS goes through before I send a product out. I definitely wouldn’t send it out while the payment is still pending.
Probably not what you wanted to hear :/ Good luck selling your dress!

If payment is pending until they receive the dress – not good! I do a lot of transactions with paypay, if this were me, I’d run from this person very fast.
Can almost guarantee it’s a scam

I’ve heard of scams like this with checks. Theres a loophole where after you deposit a check, it shows up immediately in your bank account, even though the check takes about 3 weeks to clear. So the person says it was a mistake to overpay, asks you to wire them the difference, you check you bank account and it looks like it deposited, so you do, and then 3 weeks later you are out money.
I don’t know how it works with paypal, but overpaying and then getting money back is definitely a common scam so I would contact paypal if I were you and don’t send them any money, or your dress until you get confirmation.

This sounds like the scams where someone will write you a check over the price you agreed on, you give them cash or check back and then the original check bounces and you end up out a lot of money. This sounds suspicious- I would listen to your gut feeling and cancel ASAP.

Payment pending until item is received? No way!!!!

@swtTea:Usually it’s purchased with a stolen credit card
You will ship the merchandise as promised
They will contact you about over payment and ask you send it back by money order
Dispute of charge is done by true card holder
You are out of your merchandise and the overage amount you sent

The fact that they’re asking it to be shipped to a different name and address, in addition to the overpaid amount, is a huge red flag that this is a scam using a stolen credit card.

DO NOT SEND! This exact same thing happened to me and after I sent the product out the “pending payment” was denied and i lost out on the money and I lost the item i was selling 🙁

Yeah, I guess it was fishy to me and I just didn’t think anyone would buy a dress without asking a million questions (i know I did). Thanks ladies, I’ll definitely report this. I’m not sure about cancelling the payment because like i said..this is my first transaction!

It’s a scam!!! Do not mail out the dress! Once they get the dress, the payment will deny. Contact paypal and alert them of the scam.
Email the buyer and tell her that you are not sending out the dress until you get confirmation from paypal that the funds are legit and they clear.

Ok..it sounds as though my suspicion is correct… I was feeling guilty because in case I was wrong, I didn’t want the person to be aggravated…but it sounds like scammers are looming (I have a coworker whose paypal account was hacked and he’s down $1k). I will definitely report this buyer.
