I recognize right off the bat that this is a bit of an odd request, but hear me out. Pre-covid, I was scheduled to get married at the beginning of August and picked out a gorgeous dress that I love dearly for my ceremony of around 100 people. In April, my fiancé and I make the decision to postpone our wedding until next year but plan to go ahead with a small backyard ceremony of about 15 just to get things on paper. I wasn’t planning on wearing my original dress but also wasn’t planning on buying anything new either, just wearing a white tea length dress I already owned. I haven’t been thrilled with that dress as a wedding dress (it’s cute otherwise) but I felt like I needed to be frugal so I let it go.
Fast forward even further to this past weekend, and my grandfather passes away (thankfully not related to the virus and at a healthy age of 93). I helped care for him during his final days, love him dearly, and am absolutely devastated by this loss. I know that going through with the small legal ceremony coming up is going to be difficult this year, and I’m hoping that’s where you guys come in. My grandparents were married for 66 years prior to my grandmother’s passing in 2013 and she was the absolute light of his life. Their marriage is obviously absolutely what I hope mine will be over the course of my lifetime. They were married in 1947 and her satin dress was absolutely gorgeous. I’m hoping that by providing photos, someone on here might have a recommendation for a dress somewhat similar to my grandmother’s that I could wear as a tribute to both of them. I’m not expecting anything identical and don’t need it to be incredibly fancy/expensive as I already have a dress for next year. Just something that might have some similar elements or seem like a tribute in some small way (late 40s style, satin, long sleeves, I don’t know).
Thank you in advance for reading this and for indulging my silly whim! It means a lot just to have someone read this and think about it. If you’re able to throw any suggestions my way, I appreciate it even more as I’ve been having quite the hard time coming up with more than a handful of dresses that could work.

What a lovely idea. How about something like this?
You can choose to have it made in ivory, is not too expensive I hope, and can be made to measure.
I bought a dress from this company and was extremely nervous about it, but I absolutely loved it.

What a beautiful dress and what a stunning couple your grandparents were. I think it’s lovely that you are wanting to link their wedding with your own in this way. Could you also incorporate a small memento of them into your dress or bouquet on the day?

Ooh! That is a great find – OP, that might work – what do you think?

My bridesmaids tried this on as a potential dress. They’re both very thin. The dress is SO beautiful, but definitely clings to every indent or bump. They both loved it, but ultimately felt they would feel too self-conscious to wear it on the wedding day.
Just a heads up to make sure to try it on or make sure it is returnable if ordering online.

These are all such gorgeous recommendations. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for taking the time to look into this for me. I’m not necessarily sure how these will fall into my budget or timing for the ceremony, but they’re great pieces and I’m looking into a couple of them. Thank you thank you thank you!
It’s an absolutely stunning dress and I’m trying to get an appointment to try it on. I have some concerns about the issues Ginger mentioned above and it is technically above what I wanted to spend, but it’s a great dress and really would be a good tribute, which is the most important thing to me right now.
Thank you! I obviously have a bias but I think they were objectively a very beautiful couple, both inside and out!
It’s so funny to me that you’d mention her hair because that’s probably the most universal trait our family has and something we take pride in. My mom is one of eight kids (seven girls) and every one of them has the same thick, full hair. Most of my cousins and I inherited it too. Thank you so much for the compliment! That dress is an absolutely perfect tribute, but sadly I can’t afford it. I keep coming back to look at it though!

Do you live in an area with extremely cool august weather? Those dresses look beautiful but the satin and long sleeves will trap heat. For weather above 75 degrees, I would legitimately be concerned about you overheating during a backyard ceremony and reception. Are you open to an alternative with short sleeves or sleeveless?
