This is a cry for help.
My fiance and I got engaged last July. Our original thought was to have a wedding in the backyard of the home he grew up in, since his mom has several acres and the house is amazing. It sounded like a good way to involve Fiance’s father, who passed away several years ago. Then things started to get a little crazy and, rather than deal with the hassle of not only having a backyard wedding but also convincing other people around us that it’s OK for us to do so, we booked a very expensive venue that reminded us of Fiance’s childhood home.
Then, for a bunch of personal reasons, we had to call the wedding off. We’re just starting to talk about picking a new date and one thing that we’re both super clear on: we want to have an affordable but elegant wedding at Fiance’s home.
Now, I know it can be done. I know it can. But some people in our families are having a really, really hard time getting on board. I think my mom thinks this is going to be like, a hoe-down. Which is really not our thing (although sounds like a great time).
So I’m begging for help. Did anyone else have, or is anyone else planning, a backyard wedding that actually looks a lot like a regular venue wedding? We’re thinking 100 people max, heavy apps instead of a sit down dinner, cocktails, candlelight. I have a very, very formal dress and would like the wedding to be semi-formal, just to give you an idea.
