I was able to get a sample dress of the ML Melissa (from Fall ’07, I believe!) which was a size 10. It’s a silk slip with a beautiful, full alençon lace overdress with cap sleeves. I am quite a bit smaller (5’2″, size 0 street) so I’m having it altered by a friend of my Mother-In-Law who is a seamstress.
I went to try it on today, and had issues with the underslip stripping me up, as it is not that wide at the bottom, and we left the original length of the train (hemming only the front and sides) for a more dramatic train.
I decided to ask her to hem the entire underslip to the same, floor length for ease of movement, and to be able to have a bustle done with the lace layer of the dress (which will be also been hemmed leaving the original length, again = long train.
Question is, will this look weird with only the lace as a train? I’ve been scouring google images and it seems that some brides have done this, but also they are just a lot taller and the original train isn’t that long… I’m worried that I made the wrong decicion to hem the slip. Anyone have any experience with this? Or a dress decision that was similar?
