SO…I’m in a bit of a quandry. My fiance is having a heck of a time finding a tuxedo for our wedding. He’s a big guy–over 6 feet, and has unusual proportions, so rented tuxedos NEVER fit and he’s always MISERABLE in them.
We wanted to buy a tuxedo and have it altered to fit him, but that too is proving a challenge. His jacket size and pant sizes are totally different, so we’d need a place that sells tuxedo separates. However, most places don’t sell separates in his size…so he’d have to buy a whole suit. Which means that if he goes with the jacket size, the pants will be too tight in the waist and thighs–but if he goes with the pant size, they’ll have to tear apart and entirely re-cut the jacket. Plus, we wanted the guys to wear a charcoal or medium gray, and no one seems to sell gray tuxedos, let alone tuxedo separates. The only one we found was at Men’s Wearhouse–a really nice Vera Wang Black tuxedo–but they told us that because of his frame, the pants won’t fit my fiance at all. However, even if it did, Men’s Wearhouse doesn’t have ANY vests or accessories that match our wedding colors, so we can’t rent our tuxes from them anyway.
That brought us to the bespoke option–having a custom tuxedo made for him–but when we went in for quotes, bespoke tuxedos in our area run $1800 and up. That’s more than my wedding dress! We were willing to invest in a nice tux, but $1800 was way out of budget.
That brought us to the suit option–which is far cheaper and would work for our outdoor wedding–but we realized that will complicate the groomsman’s attire. For one thing, my fiance doesn’t want to ask them to buy a whole new suit that they may or may not need or want. They’re already spending a lot of money to travel to our wedding. A bigger wrinkle, though, is that our groomsmen are scattered across the country and one won’t be arriving until late in the evening before the wedding. We need to order their rentals from a national chain (we originally wanted to rent tuxes from Jos. A. Bank) so they can all be fitted in their respective cities. Very few of those places rent simple gray suits. We can’t have the groom in a suit and the guys in tuxedos.
How hard is it to find a gray tuxedo? I swear–finding my wedding dress wasn’t this complicated.
Does anyone know a place in Los Angeles that either sells a gray tuxedo or can custom make one without it costing $1800?
Thanks in advance for any advice that you have!!!
P.S. I’d say we had plenty of time to figure this out, but we have two women on his side (his sisters) that need to buy dresses to match his groomsmen’s attire…and those dresses have to be ordered by mid-late April at the latest, so we’re now in a time crunch on top of everything else.
