Thanks for the feedback everyone, I really appreciate it! I think I need to go with what I originally wanted (halo) and not let the jewler’s opinion change mine.
I didn’t expect this whole process to be so nerve racking. I’m not going to be part of picking of the actual setting, so he can still surprise me, but I think I’ve shared enough images and links to threads that my bf *hopefully* understands exactly what I like/don’t.
I will definitely share pics once I receive it 🙂

Have you tried on rings – both solitaire like your diamond and a halo?
i was all about halos around a cushion cut diamond, that it until we went to try rings on. We went to chain and individual retailers and the halos just didn’t look as great as I’d hoped on my finger. My OH suggested trying a plain band solitaire just to see (he’s always like them) – and wow! I totally fell in love with this style.
So so try on both. And see what you really like. And then just go for what makes your heart skip a beat.

Based on what you wrote, I think your heart is set on round with the cushion halo. It looks amazing on your finger BTW!

iamdre: I have a round diamond in a cushion halo for the same reasons you listed. So that obviously gets my vote!

I have a round diamond in a cushion halo (done right), so I’m a bit biased in your favor. What your jeweler making comments on is complete personal preference. Honestly, if he is so against setting it the way you want I would find another jeweler. Maybe he is trying to cover up for the fact that he might not be able to do it “right.” I thino your stone would look gorgeous either way, and it’s totally a matter of what you’ll want to wear for the rest of your life!

I recently upgraded my setting. I looked at both cushion shaped halo and round halo. Ultimately, I decided to stay with the round shape of my diamond. I couldn’t be happier. Both settings are spectacular! You can’t go wrong with a halo! My center is 2.01 total weight is 4.5 carats and my ring is size 6.

If you don’t get the halo, and that is something you had envisioned and wanted, you will regret it.
I was going back and forth with my choice before we got engaged. I had designed 2 settings I wanted and got a quote from David Klass and at the last minute I stuck to the halo and I’ve been in love with it since I got it. No regrets. Had I gotten the solitaire, I think I would be unhappy and always wondering what if and itching to change it. I wanted my ring to be my forever ring so changing it wasn’t an option.
Also, your jeweler is a douche. They are there to guide you and make the sale, not insert personal opinions or give you incorrect information. There is no way in hell that a solitaire looks bigger than a halo. It’s not reality. A halo will always provide more finger converage because it has more stones. That would have been the minute I took my diamond and walked out the door to find another jeweler to provide me with my dream setting.

MissJulianna: Hahahaha your jeweler is a douche. +1

iamdre: get the halo! you won’t regret it, ESPECIALLY if your ring goals are wow factor, bling, and finger coverage! (ain’t nuttin wrong with that!!!) that jeweler clearly has very specific tastes and is pushing them onto you. i have a double halo myself with a 1.5 Round Brilliant center and i LOVE it. it doesn’t take away from the center at all! esp bc you have a gorg center stone, it will just add to the sparkle and the bling. &&& it’s what you originally wanted! do it!

iamdre: I totally know what you’re talking about, but I say you need to get what you want. Just make sure that the halo and round stone looks how you want it to look and you’ll be fine. Get a halo you know looks just the way you want it with a round stone. If you have a dream ring then why get something else just because of one person’s comment. They might have their opinion on what looks good and it may not be what you like. Do what YOU want

iamdre: You should take your stone to a bunch of places that have settings and bring it with you when you look at settings so you can pop the stone in and see how it looks.

iamdre: Halo! 100%. This sounds like what you really want, and you will not be happy with a solitaire (and your jeweler is ridiculous for even saying a solitaire would make your ring look bigger…definitely not the case). Round brilliant in a cushion setting is GORGEOUS!

Get what YOU want! A cushion halo with your diamond will be sooooo sparkly and eye catching. And I’m a little confused by your jeweler…wouldn’t it be in his best interest to sell you a more expensive setting with diamonds?

iamdre: I have a round diamond in a cushion halo and I LOVE IT. I LOVE round diamonds because in my opinion nothing sparkles more and I like the shape of a cushion on my finger better. I’m a halo fan because it’s more exciting to me than a solitaire (just my opinion)
