I am searching high and low on the interent looking for cheap last minute flights!! My FI’s uncle has fallen gravely ill and is not doing well!!! They have found a cancerous mass in his abdomen blocking blood flow to his heart and other organs. We are just devistated, and more my Fiance since he is so far away and alone with no family. We are looking everywhere and it is coming out to OVER $800+!!! That is insane to me! We just cannot afford that kind of price with our Wedding coming up in May! Does anyone know of any websites, or anything??? I called American because I heard they sometimes offer bereavement and compassion fares but they are not that cheap either!!!
My Fiance is in San Antonio,TX and we are in Los Angeles! =( Any advice to where to look and how to be strong while he is trying not to fall apart =( I never imagined how hard it would be to console my Fiance from far away!

@MissMalibu: try kayak.com – it allows you to search multiple airlines at once. also, if by any chance your Fiance is a student, try sta.com and studentuniverse.org. good luck and sorry about your FI’s uncle!

Try nearby airports as well — John Wayne in Orange County (SNA), Long Beach, Burbank, etc. Might find cheaper flights. I always end up getting tickets from Travelocity/Orbitz/Expedia, but try Virgin, Southwest etc coz I don’t think their airlines are part of those sites. Good luck and all the best to you, your Fiance and his family!

@MissMalibu: Delta has a bereavement and imminent death fare that you have to call for. I used it when my dad was dying this past June – and actually made it to his bedside 5 hours before he died.
Basically it was like 40% off today’s price and the return date is open ended. It costs $50 to book this over the phone, however, with a death certificate you can get that $50 returned later on. I think I paid $600 or something.
Also compare that with

I found some well under $800 on Expedia. They might not be direct flights or into LAX, though.

I’m a bit late, but I just want to say thank you all for your responses, and help. My Fi ended up getting a flight the next night, free, paid through his athletic scholarship. Unfortunately, his uncle passed right as his flight landed. I’m glad he was able to be here for a week and be a part of the funeral services. Again, I appreciate y’all’s help =)
