I would do option 2- it seems silly to fly to Madrid but not go sightseeing, just because you’ve been there (I assume your Darling Husband hasn’t?).  Option 2 just seems more practical.

@MASPA:  The train between Venice and Paris isn’t that expensive – maybe $100pp? That would let you do both. It’s a beautiful train ride on the TGC (French high-speed train) and you could get off in a couple cute little towns to get lunch or walk around on the way.

I heard Costa del Sol is amazing.I’ve been to Rome, though, and loved it there. The Coliseum was great. But I really thought that Florence was even better than Rome.

Just out of curiosity, why aren’t you planning a new trip based around one of your previous choices? Like Paris/London or Venice/coast? Otherwise, out of the two you suggested, option two sounds good.

That makes sense. I did a little searching for you, and this may not be what you’d like to do, but I don’t want you to have to compromise on trip location! (I have had to do that, it’s NO FUN.)

This shows train tickets from Venice to Paris start at $140pp (this is for a January trip, wouldn’t let me plan ahead to April) http://www.raileurope.com/us/point_to_point/ptp_results.htm?execution=e1s1&resultId=63019458&noLock=1

ItaliaRail – https://cart.italiarail.com/tickets/TrainServices.aspx?Aff=TRE&pd_id=4479 shows (this time for dates in April) that it would be $221 TOTAL.

I just don’t want you to give up on your dream trip! We are taking our honeymoon to New Orleans. We had to cancel three previous vacations there because of work or family issues that always seemed to arise right when we’d planned to go. So we’re really going all out and not making sacrifices for this trip.

I wish you so much luck in planning your trip!

@MASPA:  There are a ton of budget airlines in Europe. There’s no way it should cost $700 between Paris and Venice.

    Have you looked into any?

I only know UK ones.. like Ryanair, or else I’d make some suggestions.

Fwiw, I didn’t find there to be more than one days worth of stuff to see in Venice and we were there at Christmas! I think Rome is totally worth seeing and if you are a history nerd Pompeii isn’t too far and once you get OUT of Naples it is a pretty area. Have you considered Florence or Tuscany? A gorgeous place. I’ve never been to Malta but I think it would be cool too. I think option two for sureif I had to choose between those options.
