@Ms.Sugarsnap:  Maybe call your local tux rental store to find out?  I’d imagine the cost would differ a bit by region.  Also, perhaps you could offer to chip in a bit if you really want him in the party and you can afford to?

Those can run you around $200 easily…and that’s just for the suit itself

Our’s were $150 at a local chain- I think the rentals at men’s warehouse in my area were a similar price though.  I would go into a store and find out the price in your area.

We just paid for a tux for FBIL’s wedding this weekend and it was $110. I live in Southern Illinois, and it was from Jim’s Formalwear.

I think ours were around $160… We felt that was too much for our groomsmen to spend so we covered a portion of the costs. Would that be an option for you?

We got CK tuxes from Men’s Wearhouse (the cheapest that came in flat-front pants) and with the $40 discount it was $154 something. They pretty much always give a $30 discount and then the extra 10 was from David’s Bridal. They didn’t ask for proof to get that, but it depends on your consultant.

The tuxes (all in, shoes, etc) seemed to be $110- $200. They had cheaper ones that didn’t include shoes or pocket squares.

We didn’t want to ask the guys to pay more than $100, so we picked up the difference.

@Ms.Sugarsnap: That really isn’t that big of a deal that he was on the website and the STD went out. Seriously, no one will care. It would be bad if it was the week before and programs are done. Him backing out now if he can’t afford it is fine.

he may be saying the cost of the tux is too much but be worried about overall cost – gifts, parties, hotel(?), etc.

telling you now is the right thing to do.

My fiance and his GMs are paying around $200 for each suit, maybe a little more. They are wearing Vera Wang Black suits from Men’s Wearhouse, and that includes vests, ties, and shoes (no pocket squares, which I believe were $10 extra).

Some places have promotions like rent 5 tuxes get 1 rental free, with 5 tuxes you get a discount for all of them, etc. etc. You could also go the vest-and-tie only route (no jacket) or look for the cheapest tux in store. I think the Vera Wang suits are pricier than other options.

I had one bridesmaid bow out with 6 mos. to go because she couldn’t afford the dress, the bachelorette, and the travel expenses, and I understood. If this groomsman can’t make it work, I wouldn’t pressure him since he might already be sensitive about his financial situation. There’s nothing wrong with a mismatched party…maybe have one groomsman walk down with a bridesmaid on each arm? Or you could ask someone unconventional to fill in, like a groomswoman or a male relative of any age.

Since your date is 2013, I would attend bridal shows and watch for deals in Nov/Dec timeframe.  Around here most of the tux rental places have BOGO or special deals if you book by the end of the year for a wedding the next year.  Essentially, they’re trying to pad their order book.

We got BOGO on all the tuxes and with shoes, colored vests, standard fee for alterations, etc. they were between $85-$90/tux (with BOGO, everyone pays half price).

@Ms.Sugarsnap:  We got basic tuxes from Friar Tux, which is part of Savvi Formalwear.  The groomsmen paid about $90 for the tux.
